Ringaskiddy, Treeplanting, Picnic and Guided Walk

category cork | environment | event notice author Saturday February 04, 2006 18:40author by John Baker - Cork Greenmap Projectauthor phone 085 7027828 Report this post to the editors

This is the latest in a series of guided walks organised by Cork Greenmap Project in and around Cork City to get people out on a Sunday enjoying their local area. Previous walks have been attended by up to 100 people. They are free to participate and easy going, fun for all the family. This time we have decided to hold the walk in Ringaskiddy to draw attention to the beauty of the area that still persists in shocking contrast to the over-concentration of industry in the area, and to support the people who are doing something to change this.
All welcome, hope to see you there.

Organised by Cork Greenmap Project in co-operation with Ringaskiddy Residents Association

26th February 2006

To get there go straight through Ringaskiddy village.
Meet at the car park just before the turning for Haulbowline.

11am – 1pm – Treeplanting for the future at the proposed incinerator site, Ringaskiddy

1pm – 2pm Picnic lunch

2pm – 5pm Guided Walk to the Martello Tower

Meet in pub afterwards for drinks and chat

All welcome to attend all or some of this event, in support of Ringaskiddy Residents Association and Cork Harbour for a Safe Environment. Please bring good boots, appropriate clothing and food to share.
Also trees and tools for planting – Alder, birch and willow are best.
Please note that the trees may have to share the area with cattle. To prevent this being a problem we suggest that you make small clearings into the gorse and brambles to plant them into and give them some protection. We have done this in the past and it has proved successful.

This is a really worthwhile event to attend - a chance to demonstrate the importance of preserving and encouraging the natural environment in Ringaskiddy. In view of the EPA's approval for a toxic waste incinerator for Ringaskiddy, still fiercely opposed by the people of Cork Harbour, it is more important than ever that events like this are well supported.

Support from other environemntal groups would be greatly appreciated.
