Making Sense of Trump?s Tariffs Fri May 02, 2025 13:00 | Ramesh Thakur
There's method in Trump's tariff madness, says Ramesh Thakur. Uniting his America First, anti-Net Zero and anti-DEI policies is an imperative to untangle the US from strategic dependence on an ascendant China.

oh my God, they are monsters...
I suppose in Loony Lefty Land the Police are only allowewd to arrest people that agree to be arrested..
It was an accident....maybe the dead guys bear some responsibility for hiding in a very dangerous place as opposed to say, some bushes..
What happened to the French social model Irish leftists were all boasting about a few months ago when France voted against the EU Constitution? It was all so so superior to the Irish model, or so we were told, and the 'no' vote was interpreted by Irish leftists as the proud French being determined to defend it against the likes of Charlie McCreevy. Looks like it wasn't so good after all. No unemployment in Ireland. No riots either. Will Irish leftists learn from what is happening in France? The best solution to France's problems would be if Chirac appointed Charlie McCreevy as Prime Minister. Not sure if there is any constitutional bar in France to having a foreigner as PM. If not, they should go for it. He abolished unemployment in Ireland and could do the same for France, and massive youth unemployment of over 40 per cent appears to be what's behind the riots.
The whole problem with France is its stagnant uncompetitive economy with its high spending, high taxes, cronism and corruption and inefficiency in every area of government. No wonder then that there is such extraordinarily high unemployment in the suburbs of Paris. Young guys with no money no jobs and no prospects can't earn a living and are attacking statism full on.
What the proud French have to is to embrace the "Anglo-American" model they are so snooty about - otherwise it wouldn't just be decrepit apartments going up in smoke or Peugeot dealerships up but the Elysee Palace.
One good thing about the French is that enough of them revolt when things are going into the shitter - in 1789, throughout the 1800's, when French soldiers threatened to mutiny at the height of the First World War, during the Nazi era the brave few in the Resistance who refused to collaborate and the students in 1968 who had enough of Gaullist austerity.
Righteous Pragmatist
Just curious, have you ever been to France?
interesting idea.
Well done rightous pragmatist, you are the first international commentator to say (or near imply) that those in revolt are french.
i wonder where your incisive intellect will bring us next.
I'm almost 100% with RP in everything he says about what's wrong with France (there's other stuff too) for African and North African immigrant communities there. I don't think the "Anglo-American" model is the solution. And we all know of the race riots in Britain recently anyways.
Yawn -- they are frenchmen and frenchwomen -- that's all that they are as far as the State is concerned. There are no African-French (like African-American).
What has happened in France is that Islamic communities have been ghettoised.
There has been no encouragement for them to be part of the fabric of French society which has meant that essentially there are Islamic enclaves which are almost utterly independent from the Paris government except for activities of French police.
These communities are geographically French but are not really France at all.
The communities therefore have become increasingly radical in their Islamic beliefs and perceive themselves to be like the Palestinian people - supposedly refugees in their own land. Pathetic bans on headscarfs in French schools shows that the process of assimilation is too late.
Muslim birthrates in many European countries outstrip the traditional dominant population - in decades to come France will become increasingly ethnically Middle Eastern/ African and Muslim.
The French Republics following the Revolution have been established on secular enlightenment values totally alien to theocratic Sharia Law.
It is not too late to prevent civil war or the breakdown of French society into the future.
Far Right cranks rant about expelling not just new immigrants but entire second and third generation communities.
Left Wing cranks rant about Sharia Law living side by side with secular society.
The solution is to abandon the ideology of multiculturalism - the idea that ethnic French and ethnic Muslims can live utterly seperate lives without a common culture to unite them.
Assimilation is the solution.
France is a secular democratic society.
That is the common factor that unites all Frenchmen - that fact must extend to all its citizens - including Muslims.
There is duty on native French and the newcomers to recognise this.
Otherwise France will disintegrate in the coming decades.
have you ever been to France?
Ive read books on France, Ive studied French, Ive read French literature, I know some French people who live in my country.
Why must I have to go to France to know more?
Presumeably you mean that if I was to comment on Ancient Rome I must have been there too?
I was just curious. Were you speaking from personal experience or not.
how utterly crap. They are rioting because they have no politics. Give them politics and they'll riot somewhere else. What you can't see is that they'd do it your city tomorrow given half the chance or the right peer pressure response network. All this "integration" talk is pants.
