90th commemoration of 1916 youth committee

category national | history and heritage | event notice author Thursday October 06, 2005 13:43author by Connolly Youth Movementauthor email garethmurphy26 at hotmail dot comauthor phone (01) 8747981 Report this post to the editors

The Connolly Youth Movement is proposing progressive youth organise collectively to commemorate 1916.

A preliminary meeting to dicuss the idea will occur at 2pm on October 8th in the Teachers Club.

All interested parties welcome!

90th commemoration of 1916 youth committee

Hello!

Next April is the 90th anniversary of the 1916 rising. In recent times republicans, socialists and progressives have all come under increasing attack and condemnation for their views. Hand in hand with this has been the re-writing of our history, by politicians, journalists and academic historians who often have a less than benign agenda. The result is that the democratic, egalitarian and social character of 1916 has been distorted to support the current status quo.

The Connolly Youth Movement proposes that all republican, socialist and progressive youth groups come together for the 90th commemoration to organise events that highlight the events of 1916 and their significance. Our primary objective will be to raise the consciousness of young people in regards to the 1916 rising, in the hope they will question freedom, democracy, independence and sovereignty in Ireland today in light of the motives and politics of 1916. After all, these are very ideas on which modern Ireland is supposed to be founded. We propose that the campaign should be called "Rising Youth".

We will be holding a preliminary meeting on Saturday 8th October at 2pm in the Teachers Club. This meeting will be open to all interested parties. We hope to build a campaign that is as broad as possible and not dominated by any single organisation or subscribing to any single interpretation of republicanism.

Hope to see you there!

If this event is "open to all parties", then why did the Republican Socialist Youth Movement receive an email from Ronan Harte of the Connolly Youth Movement stating that -

"The IRSP/RSYM has not been invited to this saturdays meeting. The meeting has been called by the Connolly Youth Movement and we reserve the right to refuse entery.

This is an inaugral meeting of the youth commitee and is an invite only gathering of youth organisations and their individual members."?

Ronan Harte then called upon the INLA to disband before the CYM and CPI would collaborate politically with the RSYM and IRSP, to be honest, I found this to be quite contradictory considering the 1916 rising was an act of the Irish people bearing arms against imperialism, something which they still do today and which the proclaimation claims is a "fundamental right". The IRSP has consistently affirmed that the INLA will not disband. I replied to such a statement with -

“The Irish National Liberation Army will not disband unless such is democratically decided by the membership of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, the organisation to which the Irish National Liberation Army is under the direct control of and is subordinate to as outlined in the 'Ta Power document'…“

This ultimately can be viewed as the CPI and CYM not wanting the Republican Socialist Movement to attend the inaugural meeting of ‘Rising youth’, the reasons for which have not been presented by the CPI and CYM, but at the minute, it looks like no reason other than raw political sectarianism.

I presume members of Fianna Eireann would be refused entry on the same grounds . I shudder to think what these peoples definition of republicanism is . Presumably its one which doesnt include any actual republicans or the youth organisations they belong to.

Maybe they could define how progressive it is to be barring entry to republican youth .

Could the CYM confirm and explain why the RSYM was rejected from attending this event, despite this release now stating that "This meeting will be open to all interested parties"?

This is an absurd contradiction - how can the CYM commemorate the Easter Rising while demanding that participants disarm the working class? Raising the demands of imperialism is never a progressive option and an absurdity given the context.

This is a disgace and shows the level of political sectarianism that is continually directed at our movement from some sections of the irrelivent left. While groups such as the RYSM have just been formed and are attracting youth from throughout Ireland the exclusion by CYM shows just how out of touch certain groups within the left are. How dare they put a precondition of the INLA disbanding.

Infact the Communist Party recently met with the IRSP.

Are CYM now going to divorce their parents?

CYM are a disgrace.
Forward with the RSYM!

Didn't members of the IRSP and CPI recently attend the Camp Havana in Donegal? Apparently the CPI members present didn't lock the doors when the IRSP members approached!

Shame on the CYM

These people dare to call themselves 'the Connolly Youth Movement'?

Well I think it's time to set them straight!

James Connolly argued that the Working Class of Ireland had a right to defend themselves against imperialism and capitalism, the conditions which led him to that conclusion have not changed!
Today the workers in Ireland are not free from the chains of capitalism or imperialism and the task of building the Socialist Republic is still ongoing. When it comes to the crunch and the mass of the working class call for the present system to go, the establishment will not hand over power, it will have to be taken from them by force.
This is why we need a military wing. The INLA is the vanguard of the working class in Ireland, THERE IS NO OTHER!

An extract from Seamus Costello's 1966 Bodenstown speech;
The lesson of history shows that in the final analysis the robber baron must be dis-established by the same methods that he used to enrich himself and retain his ill-gotten gains, namely, force of arms. To this end we must organise, train, and maintain a disciplined armed force which will always be available to strike at the opportune moment.

- Nora Connolly, daughter of James Connolly, speaking of Seamus Costello shortly after his assassination.

"Of all the politicians and political people with whom I have had conversations, and who called themselves followers of Connolly, he was the only one who truly understood what James Connolly meant when he spoke of his vision of the freedom of the Irish people."

We are followers of Costello and Connolly, and those who don't understand the need for the working class to be armed, should not call themselves communist!
Those who argue that we can reform capitalism out of existance are ABUSING the name of James Connolly!

Shame on you!

Members of Dublin IRSP attended there miniscule gathering on Saturday in the teachers club, there was nothing to write home about, never mind anyone to chalenge on exclusion matters, as no one from the cpi was willing to comment when personally challenged. Then again there was so few of them there, you would have a better chance of finding a snow-ball in hell.

It was my fault, and mine alone. I was unaware that the preliminary meeting was invite only.

Sorry guys.
