Barcelona votes to end bullfights

category dublin | animal rights | other press author Wednesday November 17, 2004 21:20author by Ciaran Long - Association For Hunt Saboteursauthor email pagan_animal_liberation_front at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Barcelona has voted to ban bullfighting, after a big campaign by animal rights groups.

Most Spanish people are opposed to Bullfighting, which is only being kept alive by tourists and a small minority of spanish people. Barcelona, the regional capital, has two big bullrings, one of which is now being turned into a leisure and shopping precinct. Nearly a century ago groups started to petitioned the national parliament to ban "any spectacle that includes the spilling of blood, the death, wounding or mutilation of animals". With this ban and the ban on hunting in England and Wales going ahead, maybe the Irish Government will think about banning some of it's cruel, barbaric and unnecessary sports.

But the vote in the ajuntament (BCN council) took place in spring. Seven months ago. This is therefore _not_ news. You link to a BBC article last updated in april.
The two remaining bullfighting arena in Barcelona are placa espanya, which was derelict for years and used by vagrants and work began on it's conversion to a shopping mall in spring. The other "monumental" now offers touring entertainment fare like last month's "champion kickboxing warriors"
The ajuntament vote was followed by a Generalitat (Catalonia's government) vote before summer. So...
old old hat. And just another nail in the coffin of castilian predominance and influence in Catalonia.
The campaign you refer to as being a hundred years old was a nationalist campaign to resist the introduction of castilian torrero activity. Since the end of the dictatorship bull fighting dwindled in BCN and generally the only spectators were tourists.

Anyway, maybe you should get the Scottish to ban fox hunting and in so doing better understand the subtle differences between "regions", "countries ruled by a single state" and "soveriegn independent nation states". Then perhaps get fox hunting banned in Northern Ireland.

After recent road deaths where hoards of wild boar have colided with drivers throughout the pyreneaan country (presently part of the Spanish state) a cull is being suggested and has been supported by everyone with a taste for cheap lead peppered pork.
