'Diet' Soft Drinks include neurotoxins

category international | consumer issues | opinion/analysis author Saturday August 28, 2004 20:03author by Akrasiaauthor email daverynne at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The 'Healthy option' in soft drinks may be very bad for us.

"The problems with aspartame include not only the biochemical nature of this toxin but also it sheds light on the political nature of the players involved. The changes in regulatory policies and regulations resulting from corporate-government ties and the politicians closely associated with these ties. What I can tell you, regarding toxicology, histology and biochemistry, is that aspartame is neurotoxic. Its components easily transcend the blood-brain barrier, interfering with normal nerve cell function. This affects the glutathione and calcium mechanisms in place, destroying nerve call integrity. The methanol then breaks down into formaldehyde-formic acid components, which denaturizes/mutates the DNA: a known scientific fact. The subsequent result from this interaction and from isolates of genetically modified amino acids, the methanol, is nerve cell necrosis and subsequent organ system degradation"

Arthur M. Evangelista, a former FDA Investigator

Anybody without their head buried in the sand knows that most confectionary products on sale in our shops and supermarkets are high and sugar and can contribute to obesiety. Luckily for us, those nice multi-nationals have come up with alternatives for sugar so that we can enjoy the same sweet taste without having to worry so much about our wastelines. The marketing departments of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle etc have been desperately chasing the 'health conscious' dollar with their usual unscrupulous enthusiasm.
Products such as the new 'Sprite Zero' take this dishonesty to unprecedented levels.

The history behind the granting of commercial licenses for the use of Asparatame is truly shocking (Asparatame is also known as nutrasweet and owned by the Monsanto corporation)). Before the FDA in the United States granted its approval, it's own investigators uncovered a shocking 95% level of misdirected testing; concealed tests, collusion between corporate and their company-funded research; inappropriate ante-mortum issues; withholding of material facts; alterations of records: lying to investigators, lost records, no records; falsification of reports, bribery, and poor test methodology or design.

In 1994 the U.S. FDA released a list of sysmptoms associated with Asparatame exposure. Asparatame accounted for 75% of all adverse reactions reported that year. Here they are: (please note the inclusion of DEATH.

Abdominal Pain

One of the reasons why Asparatame is so dangerous is because it contains 10% methanol. Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol.

The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects. Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."

All alcoholic drinks contain varying levels of Methanol. (its the methanol that contributes most to a hangover).
Home distilled 'Poitin'/'moonshine' etc are often dangerous and can sometimes lead to blindness, not due to their high Ethanol (true alcohol) content but because of the unusually high Methanol content.
Anyway my point is that if youre going to get worried about Aspartame producing minute amounts of Methanol upon metabolism, why not include in your scare report the fact that people willingly imbibe litres of the stuff over a lifetime -without serious consequences The fact would add a little perspective to an otherwise fashionable but ungrouded article.
All this food-scare stuff is just ludicrous, considering the same people who will decry the presence of aspartame in a soft-drink will gladly add that soft drink to half a litre of Vodka and bat not an eye-lid at the massive amounts of Methanol contained therein.

Theres nothing worse than a LITTLE knowledge.

But so is Ethanol, which neutralises the harmful effects Methanol has on the human body. Asparatame has no Ethanol ingredient and this is why it is so dangerous.

Of course, if you drink Pure methanol or methylated spirits, you are going to seriously damage your body

Let's see what the doctors say:

The simultaneous ingestion of ethanol has no appreciable effect on the proposed "safe" and "toxic" doses when considering exposure over several hours.

As an adult you have the choice to drink or not and we tend to ignore what is good and not good for us. Our children on the other hand do not drink alcohol and because of their small body weights and newly evolving immune systems, are more sensitive to all chemical additives. Hence the concern over innoculations being linked to autism. (which is on the rise at alarming rate) For their sake we should try to limit their exposure to any toxins consumed and worn. Air quality of their environments and toys with lead paint are things to consider too. Why not try to get back to home cooked meals with fresh organic veggies and fruits, and make as many good choices as possible so they have half a chance in a world that's getting more toxic by the minute.

This is damned lies. The study you're referring to has been thoroughly discredited. There is no lunk between autisma nd innoculations.

to the two commentators above, please publish the links so that people can make their
