Independent Cllr calls for power sharing on Westport Town Council

category mayo | politics / elections | press release author Thursday July 08, 2004 01:24author by Cllr Keith Martin - Indepdent Candidateauthor email newseditor at ireland dot comauthor address Westport Mayo Report this post to the editors

Cllr says power should be shared equally

Westport Town Cllr calls for end of exclusion from seat of power.

Independent Councillor Keith Martin has called for the rotation of the positions of Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council.

Cllr Martin says that there are 10 positions to be filled over five years. We have nine councillors, if Westport Town Council really is the council where politics is left outside the chamber why shouldn't these positions rotate to members irrespective of their political affiliation?

My Independent colleague Cllr Martin Keane has been a councillor for over ten years yet he was never elected to the chair. I think Cllr Keane deserves to serve a year as Cathaoirleach and this is something I would strive to secure during the coming five years.

Likewise my fellow freshmen councillors Dave Keating and Myles Staunton would make excellent first citizens. They polled extremely well and by giving them a chance in the chair, we their fellow councillors, would be acknowledging the people of Westport's call for change.

That is not to say that the excellent work of veteran councillors should be ignored but I am calling for the power to be shared equally irrespective of party politics or years served.

iam in work having one of those conspiricy theory conversations that that near seem to end with any definate conclusion it started of with the bildaberg group and went into the trilateral commision when we started doing a search on the net. when it came to the trilateral commision amoungt a list of former leaders of countries advisers indusrialists and editors of newspapers we found a name and discription of one myles staunton a former member of the irish senate from mayo.

a futher search revileld that there was a member of the irish senate from mayo also member of uderas na gael and (don't laugh) farms seaweed and exports it scotland???? I don't know if senator myles staunton is the same as counciller myles staunton but this file came up in the search and iam curious how a seaweed farmer and senator o yeah forgot solisitor as well became conected with some of the worlds most influental people if anyone can add (within libal laws don't want to get anybody into trouble) any information on him i think it would be interesting o yeah he was a senater FG was elected onto administration panel and severd on public accounts commitie in 1981 at least so he is a public figure i know it's bordering on parinioa but you know when you get something between your teeth any way any help appriciated

Better to keep quiet when you don't know what you are talking about.

The story says the council prides itself on leaving politics outside the door yet has excluded a ten year serving independent cllr.

Now do you understand?

How can they leave politics outside the chamber yet still discriminate against a cllr?

Read the stories before you post.....that's all I ask.

I think there should be more power sharing.
Never been to Westport but Cllr martin, if you are there keep up the good work and don't bother with the nay sayers who don't bother to read before commenting!

Yes, of course it should be rotated and not just there but all the councils.

Your dead right Ho-hum.

"My Independent colleague Cllr Martin Keane has been a councillor for over ten years yet he was never elected to the chair."

So nobody voted for him? Well stop whining then. Try and get some votes like everyone else, not that we even know who he is and what he stands for.

I think it's a cool idea.

You don't state what any of these councillors stand for. You just leave it to us to guess what their positions might be on any particular issue. If they are all interchangable, as you seem to be suggesting, then why should any of us concern ourselves with who occupies what position on the council?
Particularly when some of us have had to leave the west to get jobs
