The early train from Heuston leaves platform 2 at 7.10am, gets to Limerick at 9.25am. One change there and it leaves Limerick at 9.30am and arrives in Ennis at 10.15 am.

There is a late train if people are heading down the night before. It leaves Heuston at 9pm but has two changes. Including what seems to be an overnight stop in Limerick. It arrives in Limerick at 11.37pm, departs from there at 6am and gets to Ennis at 6.45am.
( Public transport - my arse! )

Bus Eireann have a bus leaving Busarus in Dublin at 7am but it doesn't get to Ennis ( via Galway ) til 12.10. The late bus, for overnighters, leaves Busarus at 18.30 and arrives in Ennis Bus Station at 00.44 with a journey time of 6 hours and 14 minutes and two ( count them ) changes!

The two links will get you more details.

There is only one hostel in Ennis, which is quite big and which has vacancies. If you come down, bring I.D as the hostel won't let you in without it i.e. a passport or a drivers licence.
