Anti-War Ireland criticises visit of US Secretary of Health to Ireland

category national | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Sunday May 09, 2004 04:35author by Anti-War Irelandauthor email info at antiwarireland dot orgauthor phone 087 1258325 Report this post to the editors

Top US official to visit Ireland

PRESS RELEASE, 9/5/04

ANTI-WAR IRELAND criticises presence of US Secretary of Health in Cork

Tommy Thompson, the US Secretary of Health, is due to visit Cork city to attend a meeting of 25 EU Health Ministers next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 11th and 12th. The meeting, hosted by Minister Michael Martin, will be held in the Rochestown Park Hotel and it is expected that Secretary Thompson will be present on Wednesday to address the gathering.

Anti-War Ireland, a national alliance of anti-war groups that includes the Cork Anti-War Campaign, is opposing the presence in Ireland of this senior member of the Bush administration.

According to Dr Fintan Lane, convenor of Anti-War Ireland: "It is wholly inappropriate that a welcome has been extended to Mr Thompson, particularly in the context of recent revelations regarding the torture and mistreatment of Iraqi detainees by US forces and the systematic killing of civilians in Fallujah and other Iraqi towns. War is a health issue also and the current US administration is a menace to the well-being of innocent people across the globe. The majority of Irish people oppose the US war on Iraq and Michael Martin should have taken this into account before he invited a senior Bush official to this country."

According to Dr Lane: "Tommy Thompson is a staunch neo-conservative who as a member of Bush's cabinet is playing a direct role in the decision-making process on Iraq. He is deeply implicated in the slaughter that has enveloped that country. Mind you, the Irish government is also implicated in the Iraqi conflict through its provision of facilities to the US war machine at Shannon airport. The prosecution of Mary Kelly is a further sign of this State's involvement with this discredited and disreputable US military adventure."

Concluding, Dr Lane said: "Tommy Thompson should not be welcomed in this country. His hands are steeped in the blood of thousands of Iraqi men, women and children."

Anti-War Ireland has learned that the EU Ministers, and possibly Mr Thompson himself, will be staying at the Hayfield Manor Hotel, off College Road in Cork city, on the Tuesday night. There will be a major security operation in place and a significant number of the adjoining streets will be closed off to traffic. Residents in the area have been approached over the past few days by gardai and advised that they will not be allowed to park their cars in certain streets for the duration of the security operation.

Anti-War Ireland and the Cork Anti-War Campaign are supporting a demonstration on Tuesday morning that will be made up of a coalition of progressive campaigning groups and political parties in the Cork region. Going under the title 'No Prescriptions for Profit', this demonstration will assemble at Douglas Court Shopping Centre at 10am before marching to the Rochestown Park Hotel. We are calling on people to turn out in numbers for this demonstration.

On Wednesday morning at 8.30am, anti-war activists from Anti-War Ireland and the Cork Anti-War Campaign will also mount a picket at the hotel against the presence of Tommy Thompson. We intend to make our voices heard against the ongoing illegal occupation of Iraq, and we will be letting Secretary Thompson know that not all Irish people intend playing the part of lapdog to George W. Bush and his far-right Christian fundamentalist administration.

So, you are having one demo at 10am on Tuesday morning and another at 8.30am on Wednesday morning? Don't any of you people ever go to work like the rest of the population? Are you all on welfare? Or are you all sociology lecturers paid by the taxpayer and who can take unlimited time off whenever you feel like it, unlike those who work in the productive sector and have to compete against hard-working East Europeans, Americans, South Koreans and Singaporese?

Never mind the last comment Fintan, the work that you are doing in stopping this war is exemplary, keep up the good work.

Im sure right now the American Minister for Health is shitting in his pants. Oh no a bunch of idioys who seem to think I have some bearing on the War in Iraq wanna come and protest at times when most people will be working or on their way to work. Guys get a job and if you have one stop scrounging off to mona at someone who has no bearing on your movement. This just proves that you'll protest at anyone for no reason and put on a public display. Fintan get a life!!

Listen Dribbles, if anybody needs to get a life, it's clearly you! You seem to spend a lot of time logging into indymedia looking for stuff and people to whinge about. Take up golf or something. This negative energy won't do you much good in the long run.

Well done to Anti-War Ireland for organising this protest.

Drbinoche - are you the ginger fella I know from Dublin who goes by that name? There couldn't be too many Drbinoche's out there esp in Ireland.

I doubt if I would call my hair ginger, it would be more browny. I doubt if you would know me from Dubin, I tend not to hang out with any of the Anti-War groups. Hell if there is someone else going around calling themselves Drbinoche, then more power to em its a great name.

As for lots of free time, I usually am up to my tonsils in work, but you know you have some time off, so you decide to see whats happening in my favourite city on many many levels.

Maybe the reason you believe I just argue is that alot of the ideas on this site do not seem to have been fully thought out and since alot of you guys can't even get along, I don't even have to start hassle for you guys to start at each others throats.

EU Health Ministers, bureaucrats and possibly the US Health Minister Tommy Thompson will be staying at Cork's exclusive Hayfield Manor Hotel, often used by so-called VIPs because of its high walls and 'securability'. The health ministers won't be able to forget the protests and the occupation of Iraq that easily.

Hundreds of homes in the vicinity of Hayfield manor were visited by Gardai with details of tight security and a total traffic cordon around the area.

One local resident, anti-war activist Tony C.(famous for his "Neutral My Arse" poster at Shannon) decided to take advantage of the proximity to his home of the minister's accommodation and yesterday hoisted an Iraqi flag on a 32 foot mast in his back garden so whether it's arriving and leaving the conference centre at the Rochestown Park Hotel across the city or taking a stroll in Hayfield Manor, the ministers cannot escape the Iraq occupation issue.

O pity all ye who cannot see past going in and out of your jobs every day.
Cant you see that what the U.S is doing is more important than any fucking job and that if they are allowed continue down this path of war, imperialism incitement and greed ytour job will be the least thing on your mind.
If the daily commute and drudgery of work is whats suppressing your will to fight a dangerous superpower then so be it,but let others who have that drive and will do it without petty critcisms like those above.
Good luck with the protest!

The Anti-war Ireland/Cork Anti-War Campaign picket of US Secretary of Health, Tommy Thompson, will now convene at 8.30am on Wednesday outside the Rochestown Park Hotel. Thompson will be arriving around that time and is scheduled to give a press conference at 10.30am.

Please make a special effort to attend. Remember that this man is a senior figure in the Bush ministerial cabinet and has a direct involvement in the brutal occupation of Iraq.

Well you are pretty close, the guy you are talking about, if it is the same person is a friend of my sons, his names Phil. He was the original DrB, but I borrowed the name coz its a great one. Oh and if you think I am bad, you should never argue with him, he really has no time for Anti-War people, I believe he subscribes to the 'Baton-charge the lot of em' group of people. Nice guy all the same. If you know him, you probably know my son. And Id imagine you know em from the Temple Bar region of Dublin. Used to hang out there alot when they were younger.

As for the argument about why we say get a job, you see you need a job to make money and maybe further your life, from which you will have a better ability to help others if you so wish. If you are unemployed you aint too rich and as such you can't afford to travel to Shannon, or help pay for banners and posters.

My other point about the job is, that your employers must be able to do without you for a few hours or days, if you can just decide to take a morning off to protest in Shannon or Dromoland or one of those. Either way, your job is actually a bit more important than what the previous poster believes. And by working you can pay your taxes and help pay your way in society.

Is your 'son' the baldy bollix Connor or the other one, whats his name again? Ritchie I think. Or are you just pretending to be an ex-army arsehead and you're really that young fella Binoche witht he long hair?

author by Drbinochepublication date Tue May 11, 2004 00:38author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I know both of those lads as well and believe me if Connor were standing in front of you, I would imagine you would know to shut your mouth as the man would mop the floor with you. Surprising how on this site if you are pro-war or even just someone who likes to point out problems, your identity is immediately suspect. So in the last two months it has been suggested that I am actually three people in one, two of whom live in a totally different country, and now the best one, I am actually a young man. Jesus I fucking wish I was as young as the lads, then maybe I could join em when you guys do your usual protests and they do their little plans.

I mean honestly, what do you guys need as evidence to prove I am who I claim I am. And also more importantly if this is the level of secuirty that you require to be allowed into your group, then fuck me you guys have worse secuirty than Mossad!!!

BTW what might I ask is your name?? Just out of curiosity so I can ask the lads to keep an eye out for you. Hell I might just ask Connor and Baz to ask around they are good at getting me info.

this link will bring you back to the still internationally recognised flag of the state of Iraq which is still illegally occupied by the USA assisted by the UK.
That flag shows horizontal bars of white, red and black and three stars for pan-arabism, as proposed by various figures such as the Baath party and Nassar. Iraq got three stars the other baath states less. Saddam went through a "god phase" close to the end, and added the arabic inscription "God is Great", which isn't in the version being flown,
well flown, by Tony.

It is you but Phil. It is, it is, it is. Nothing will tell me any different. I'll see you about soon, soft-lad. See you very soon and your mates.

author by Drbinochepublication date Tue May 11, 2004 23:58author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I think you mean you'll see Phil soon. I don't believe we have ever met as I tend not to converse with many anti-war people, they tend to be full of questions and not enough answers.

I see you are reluctant to give your name. Thats strange, you seem to behave as if you are not afraid of the lads or of Phil, if thats the case surely you would not be afraid of giving your name as the lads could do nothing to you. Oh well, Ill tell Phil of your regards and tell him to keep an eye out for Anti-War idiots, who are unable to differentiate a middle aged man from a young man.

Irrespective can we please get back onto the point, to those not labelled Me, what is your motivation for harrassing the Minister for Health, a man who whilst in the cabinet of Bush et al, is not directly responsible for any actions in Iraq??
