category national | summit mobilisations | press release author Friday April 30, 2004 16:38author by Cycle Campaignerauthor email maxy_pad at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

A conference held by patiies from the UK and Ireland with a vast knowledge of cycle campaigning.

Press Release: Dublin hosts largest Cycle Campaigner's conference ever to be held in Ireland

From: Dublin Cycling Campaign Thurs, 29 April

Event Date: Saturday 1 May at 9.00am-5.30pm
Location: Joly Theatre, Hamilton building, Trinity College, Dublin

Over 100 cycling campaigners from Ireland and the UK will gather in Trinity college on May 1, for a series of lectures and talks on the issues affecting cycling. David Maher, PRO of the Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) explained "we organised this event so as to gain from the experience of designers and campaigners in other cities as how best to make Dublin a bicycle friendly city. Our keynote speaker will be the internationally renowned Urban Designer and Author Dr. Jan Gehl from Denmark to deliver the key note speech ?Copenhagen ? A Cycling Success Story?. Dr. Gehl has overseen a doubling of cycling numbers in Copenhagen over the past 20 years, and now over 35% of all journeys in Copenhagen are made by bicycle. So clearly the authourities in Ireland have much to be learn".

Other speakers and topics at the event include
1. John Franklin, UK (Cycle Campaign Network): 'The evolution of cycle planning and campaigning in the UK'
2. Michael Collins of the S2S group: 'The Sutton to Sandycove Cycle Trail'
3. The Gardai - will also provide a speaker on cycling and the law
4. Michael Ahern of the The Dublin Transport Office (organisers of Vélo-city 2005) will also attend.
5. David Maher of the Dublin Cycling Campaign: 'National Campaigning - Irish Rail and National Safety Council'

Maher continued "the timing of the event is ideal, with so many foreign press and delegates in the city. Dublin has much to learn not just from cities like Copenhagen but also from the new EU cities such as Prague. We hope to add to the great atmosphere in the city over the may weekend." The event will also include a 10 Best and 10 Worst Cycle Road Schemes Display, which have been nominated by cyclists in Dublin.

The weekend will also include a number of social events:
1. Social event on Saturday night in conjunction with Sustainable Ireland
2. Guided Cycles of Dublin on the Sunday

The Dublin Cycling Campaign is a voluntary organisation that has represented Dublin's cyclists for over 10 years

I now this clashes with May Day protests but if you are interested in creating a better and safer environment for cyclists in this appalling city well come along and meet the experts to see what knowledge they can impart to you!
