But don't believe everything that you hear. The real journalism happens at places like http://www.counterpunch.org and http://www.indymedia.org But I guess you know that already. Good luck in NYC and always remember "capitalism != democracy".

"The US is no different than any other Empire, and should be evaluated on its merits; appreciated for its good effects, and called to account for its crimes. "

I think this is a great statement. Thank you fully!

I myself am 27 years old and have moved to the USA/New York for the great dreams of financial success and liberal freedom that was since my youth so much promoted in Berlin by the Allies (CIA-Propaganda "The American Dream?).

This shurely is a great country. And for all the opportunities that open up to one that aware of them it is truely a benefit. But this vision is excactly what I feel is changing slowly and by the means of miseducation inside of the US itself steadily taken away from it's people.

I mean people here are really generally not as educated as I thought, compared to germany. Even though everyone is talking about the cutbacks even in our germany government of education. But here many seem to be very shortsited. I believe one of the main reasons are the masses of immigrants coming into this country. It probably is hard to deal with all these different cultures at once.

I don't write much in these blogs, but I just hope to speak out my mind and hit someone out there.

I am very alarmed of what is going on here in NY. What I have learned over and over again in school in germany is somewhat similar to that which I experience now. A police presence justified by the outcome of terror (by the media?) and the "misjudgement" of the latest iraqu-policies, etc, is very hard to compare with anything else in history to than with the burning of the Reichstag in Germany. Maybe this sounds far off, but didn't Hitler change laws with that same justification as is now done by Mr. Bush (Patriotic Act, etc.).

I was almost arrested coming from work joining a peacful demo (bicycle-demo). The reason was totally unjustified. We where pushed all over and provoked, later over 200 arrests where made. The accusation was hindering traffic....laugh. The only reason that the police let me out, because I could convince one that I was working there (I showed him my work ID) and that I am german (I am not shure how much weight that had on the cop.).

Love, Peace, and Hairgrease!!!

Sorry KD and Ruairi, but your slavish regard for the wonderful gifts of Western Civilisation (bestowed on us, it goes without saying, by the US) are taken just a wee bit too far.

In your yearning to fully express your many many thanks (and praise) to our American cousins for the gifts of freedom, literacy (in English), 'democracy', technological toys etc. you are both prone to going that bit too far - to the willfully imaginative department, it seems. Not a place for grown-ups.

I dont have to go into all that about the other countries who helped to free the world from fascism? do I? nor should I have to point out the role played by British allies in their stance against Irish freedom from feudal governance? do I? nor should I have to mention that the net, in so far as it was 'invented' by anyone, was invented by an Englishman?

The US is no different than any other Empire, and should be evaluated on its merits; appreciated for its good effects, and called to account for its crimes. Its just unfortunate (for you cheerleaders) that they have entered into a 'Nero Period' just at the moment. God bless 'em.

Hit the nail on the head there KD. Another ironic quirk of course being the fact that the 'net was created by the Pentagon. Thanks guys!!

Whilst I could go on for hours about how bad the logic is behind the anti-bush/anti-war/pro-enviro-/etc/etc arguments, I shan't(if for no other reason than I have finally realized that logic has nothing to do with it . . .).
I shall merely point out that isn't it wonderful? Democracy I mean?
Here you are, on your moral high horse, declaring the US's(apparent) rogue status running rampant across the nations of the world, whilst others, living in repressive regimes, are shot for trying to do exactly what you are doing.
Just stop and think , just for a short fraction of a moment, how wondrous, how incredible, how momentous such an ability would have been to people living under Hussein in Iraq. If they had the same access to the mechanisms of freedom that you(I would imagine) unconsciously utilize to spread your "word" of anti-Bush sentiment(don't misconstrue here - I am non partisan with American politics)then Hussein would have been powerless to suppress his people.
But alas, it was a dictatorship, and no free media existed.
You take all the wonders that Western Civilization has given you access to, and use it stir up contempt for the very same system you are using.
If only the Iraqi's had such (media) power (then and now) I doubt there would ever have been a war - a revolution from within perhaps.
To keep the argument simple a comparison may assist: Where, it is interesting to think, would the would be today, how would it have turned out, if the US hadn't kicked the NAZI dictatorship out of Europe, and the Japanese Autocracy out of the Pacific 60 yrs ago?
One thing I know (as an Australian) I'd be speaking japanese, and you(assuming that you are from Ireland), German.
