Indymedia centre visit yesterday and today

category dublin | arts and media | opinion/analysis author Saturday April 24, 2004 21:25author by Eoin Dubsky Report this post to the editors

You will see photos from the Indymedia centre elsewhere on this site, but you have to see it to believe it yourself. The place is beaming with energy and supportive, DIY media culture. Workshops, screenings, photo exhibits, literature and free software abound.

The Centre has space for far more people than were there yesterday and today. Still everyone got together for the screenings, spread out for chatting and networking, and got into groups again for workshops in media and technology.

I'm typing this message running the free GNU/Linux CD which the Irish Free Software Organisation (IFSO) folks kindly gave me before I left today. Free Software! No software patents! Woohoo! :-)

The Undercurrents video last night, and JD's screening today, were a brilliant mix of news from struggles and actions, parodies and some official corporate videos which could just as well have been parodies as well.

Anyone who can make it to Dublin in the coming days and has any interest at all in alternative media and people's struggles can't miss this.

Bit disappointing turnout? Was expecting hordes of people there for last night's video and today's forum with VB.

Needs to be pushed more on the website. Front page news every day.

Cead Mile Failte % for the brilliant efforts put in and right in the heart of the historical location of Revolutionary Socialism in Ireland.
Get and see that video, someone has a sublime sense of humour. George Bush and Tony Blair have a much better voice than the Voicelessish Party

We have no funding apart from the subscription fees of a small number of people who have paid to join the support group. We are also charging a 2 euro membership fee for the 10 day festival. Apart from that everything has been donated or loaned, from an awful lot of labour, to 300 chairs, tablies, computers, cinema screen... There is a lot of goodwill out there for indymedia.
