Palestinian Prime Minister Qurei visits Dublin for talks on peace process
Date: 9 Feb 2004
The Taoiseach and President of the European Council Mr. Bertie Ahern welcomed Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei in Dublin today for discussions on a range of issues, including the Middle East peace process, the status of the Roadmap, means of reviving negotiations, and the role of the European Union in the peace process.
The Taoiseach expressed his support for an early meeting between the Israeli and Palestinian Prime Ministers and was briefed on preparations for holding such a meeting by Prime Minister Qurei. Ireland would like to see both sides make a package of small, concrete and visible steps which would serve to restart the process.
Both the Taoiseach and Prime Minister Qurei condemned terrorism and called for an end to violence in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Taoiseach said Ireland would work with our partners in the European Union, with the other members of the Quartet, and with the Israeli and Palestinian Governments to hasten the day when the peoples of the Middle East can live together in security and friendship.
