category national | miscellaneous | press release author Sunday February 08, 2004 11:10author by Indymedia Ireland Editorial Group - Indymedia Ireland Report this post to the editors

This page contains information on updated websites, new issues of journals and newspapers, videos available on the net etc. A similar page will be published each week.

Please add your information here. Include direct links if you have them, or details on where the print publication is available, if not.

This is not a normal newswire page and has different editorial rules. It will stay at the top of the wire no matter how many stories are published in the meantime. It is also designed as a pointer to other sites, so please do not (a) post full articles, or (b) add comments that don't consist of information on new content in the paper/website/whatever. This means that comments on who did what to whom, which party got more votes, what you think of a particular author or article, whose hamster was eaten by Freddie Starr , or anything else, will be hidden. If you are upset by an article linked to, you can add a comment or an (original and more-than-a-single-line) article as a standard newswire story. This is a page for links and updates only. The normal practice of hiding links to sites that are racist, discriminatory etc. will be followed.

Media Updates for Jan 25th - Feb 1st

Irish Anarchist News Service
What is Anarchomedia

Anarchomedia provides a common, interactive platform for anarchists in Ireland to post reports and to facilitate publication from anarchos who don't have the ability to publish themselves, e.g. without the necessary skills/time for websites, the copier access for newsletters, or the collective strength of organisation on the struggle towards an anarchist society and against the current forms of oppression; capitalism, gender isolation, racism and environmental degredation. Not to concentrate solely on the negative, Anarchomedia also carries reports on what is being done by anarchists and ordinary people to bring an end to this system of exploitation. Reports on Anarchomedia cover a wide range of issues and topics – from community organising to international mobilisations against capital, from anti-war activism to environmental activism.
The Workings of Anarchomedia

The content on Anarchomedia is created by a collective going under the guise of the Anarchomedia Collective. Unlike Indymedia, Anarchomedia does not operate an “open publishing” newswire but a moderated newswire where the content is posted by the collective of editors. While not wanting to be critical of the concept of “open publishing” we want a media where a certain level of reporting can always be expected by our readers. By having a closed newswire we can also effectively rule out the presence of trolls and spamming of the newswire. Readers can post comments on the articles posted to the site allowing for open debate on the newswire.

Other Services

Anarchomedia also offers other services to the anarchist & activist community in Ireland. As well as anarchist news, Anarchomedia features forums to move debate from the newswire. The forums exist to allow for debate between anarchists and anyone else who wishes to visit the site. Find these at:

http://anarchomedia.myikonboard.com/viewboard.php

The newswire also features notifications for upcoming events. Organisers of events should contact the collective and we will publicise the event on the site.

While all of the above are now ready for visitors and participation (only a few articles are online at the moment, be patient more will come) we are now working on putting together several sections that will have an abundance of information on anarchism and the anarchist scene in Ireland. Anarchomedia will supply its visitors with a directory of publications by anarchists/anti-authoritarian individuals or groups, a list of active anarchist/anti-authoritarian/grassroots groups, an introduction to anarchism and information on book shops and autonomous/radical zones around the island.

Getting Involved

Anarchomedia needs more editors as we don’t yet have a full house. If you think you have what it takes to be an anarchomedia editor and agree to the editorial policy then email us, tell us all about yourself, who you are, where you’re from, why you wanna get involved, organisations, groups or campaigns your involved in and whatever else you can think we might need/want to know.
It is important that as many anarchists as possible (either those living in Ireland, or interested in Irish anarchism) get involved with the day to day upkeep of the site. If you use the site, then try and lend a hand in maintaining it.

If you’re interested, here’s a little bit of info on the collective:

- The Anarchomedia collective work on a non-hierarchical basis.

- We reject all systems of domination and discrimination and come from varying anarchist tendencies (and no problems!).

- Anarchomedia has been given its webspace by comrades in the Anarchist Federation but remains independent from that and any other organisations

- We understand that by lobbying there will be no radical change. As a collective our attitude is assertive, and where necessary confrontational.

- Recruit, recruit, and recruit!!!

- In order to join the collective you must either meet with one of the members of the collective in your area or know one of us.

The latest edition of the Irish anarchist paper Workers Solidarity is online. This is our 20th year of publication and this issue sees a new look.

You can read the articles online at http://struggle.ws/wsm/ws/2004

Articles in this issue include

A busy year for the anarchist bogeyman
On virtually every occasion that anarchists were mentioned in the media in 2003, it was in the context of a scare story about threatened violence. The reality of anarchist activity was far, far different. While we were arrested, fined, injuncted and jailed in significant numbers for taking part in peaceful protests, we did not thrown a blow at a single person. Never once were we given a chance to give our side of the story.

Anarchism on the Move
Kieron Barry reviews 2003, a busy year for Irish Anarchists. A small but growing number of anarchists are building opposition to the status quo based on the politics of freedom and equality

Health, education, housing, employers and MEP's

Bertie's European Act
Over the next six months you will be hearing a lot about the European Union (EU). Part of the reason for this is that Ireland is taking over 'The Presidency' of the EU, but the other part is that in June elections will be held for the European 'parliament' in Brussels.

The final victory will be the people's

Voices from the Ecological Resistance

Anarcha-Feminism
An important principle of anarchism and one that more than any other differentiates it from other types of socialism is its emphasis on freedom and non-hierarchical social relations. Central to anarchism is the rejection of any power hierarchy between men and women.

The Fight for a Free Iraq
What is life like for the Iraqi workers caught under the occupation and all too often in the cross-fire? The US/UK occupying force is not too happy that Iraqi workers are organizing themselves rather then obeying the puppet Iraqi Governing Council

Today the "link" between Spanish and Irish politics is clearer than most days.
Ryanair:- ("Mrs") Aznar the powerful Palacio is upset about the tax breaks given to Ryanair especially at Charleroi airport. It appears, that the most succesful Irish Air Carrier which has in it's last quarterly report demostrated excellent business acumen and ability to "survive" at an international level, is being afforded "privelage" which it might not actually warrent. Interestingly the airline is also under attack from disability rights groups in the UK and Ireland for charging wheelchair users 18eu for a use of another companies hired wheelchair for access to Ryanair aircraft.
You may watch the stock go up and down at:-

Now this affair is of concern to one Irish Politician who is _somewhat powerful_ but not as powerful as he thought.
Mr Pat Cox.
It will be interesting to see if MR Pat Cox will under "pressure" alter his decisions on the Ryanair corp.

Mr Pat Cox, is also due to recieve this week a letter from Mr Ernest Benach, the president of the Catalan Parliament, whom readers might be remember is afforded the title "an ceann chomhairle eile".In it, the Catalan Parliament (cross party) will outline it's statements on terrorism, it's opposition to armed force, and it's very serious indignation at the refusal of Mr Pat Cox to meet with Mr Ernest Benach earlier this month, which quiet obviously was a slight upon the dignity of not only his office but of Catalonia. A decision which Mr Pat Cox took personally and most apparently with more consideration of his personal dislike of Mr Benach's political affiliation rather than any respect due to Catalan and indeed Spanish Governmental institutions.

A filmmaker and pro-free trade businessman questions why he was shot by police with a beanbag weapon during FTAA talks when he was on the sidewalk with other media, not in the street protesting.

It was late afternoon on Nov. 20, 2003, the bloodiest day of protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas summit in Miami.

Police and demonstrators had been skirmishing since mid-morning. About 4 p.m., police in riot gear began pushing protesters off Biscayne Boulevard onto Northeast Third Street.

A local commercial filmmaker named Carl Kesser found himself caught between heavily armed Miami police and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and retreating protesters.....

This means that Ireland will become even more important - Shannon is the 'Pit Stop' into europe and then onward to the middle east.

Other bases will be used less as 'Pit Stops' thus making Shannon a key point in the US Empire.

that's my read on it, anyway.

The US is preparing to cut the number of troops stationed in Europe by up to a third, according to the Financial Times.

However, Washington will not establish new permanent bases in Europe as some had feared it would to get back at member states for their opposition to the US-led war in Iraq.

....

"From there, they will be sent on exercises or training missions to small bases established on a temporary basis in Poland, Romania or Bulgaria. The old days of the giant US barracks ... are over."

At the moment, the US has 119,000 troops in Europe, most of which - 80,000 - are stationed in Germany.

Paris--In a letter to Irish President, Mary McAleese, the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Director for International Liaison, Dr. Shimon Samuels, wrote that "Tomorrow, 27 January, most European Union member states will mark Holocaust Commemoration Day (the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp)," while drawing her attention to an Irish-related Holocaust-era issue.

Recalling that, "only last month you were quoted in eloquent praise of the "Irish Museum of the Year Award" being bestowed upon the Hunt Museum in Limerick," Samuels pointed to "the Irish Arts Review allusions to the extensive pre-war Nazi connections of John Hunt and Gertrude, his German-born wife." Fresh controversy about Donald Rumsfeld's personal dealings with Saddam Hussein was provoked yesterday by new documents that reveal he went to Iraq to show America's support for the regime despite its use of chemical weapons.

The formerly secret documents reveal the Defense Secretary traveled to Baghdad 20 years ago to assure Iraq that America's condemnation of its use of chemical weapons was made "strictly" in principle.

The criticism in no way changed Washington's wish to support Iraq in its war against Iran and "to improve bi-lateral relations ... at a pace of Iraq's choosing".

According to a new poll, only 15 per cent of us would vote for the President

[....]

For decades now, we have alternately railed against, and revelled in, the generalized American ignorance of Canada. At the same time, we have prided ourselves on being one of our neighbour's harshest critics. At the centre of our relationship is the conceit that so much of what we produce -- resources, goods, culture, people -- flows south, that America must really need us. Now, with the U.S. showing a willingness to stand alone and demand the obeisance due to the last remaining superpower, Canada, like the rest of the world, is caught up in an uncomfortable new reality. Bush's repeated "with us or against us" declarations have made it clear that there are new, tougher requirements for being America's ally. And as long as he remains well-positioned for another four years in the White House, we may have to do our share of puckering up. Canadians know that. We just don't have to like it.

As local and western media speculate on the identity of the February 1 suicide bombers in Irbil that killed dozens of Kurds, another news item slipped past the notice of most. During the last week of January, Paul Bremer (Colonial Overseer in Iraq), gave notice to another group of Kurds that the United States would begin military operations against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), a formerly Marxist-Leninist organization dedicated to armed struggle in the name of Kurdish independence. In terms of the public mission of the US military in Iraq, there is no real reason for this move. Instead, this decision by the US reflects a deal that Washington worked out with the government of Turkey, which has fought this organization and Kurdish independence since time immemorial. In return, one assumes that Turkey will not move troops into Kurd-held territory in Iraq, at least for now.

For those who are not familiar with the PKK, let me briefly surmise their history and political philosophy. In their over quarter century of existence, this group has waged a consistent struggle for a Kurdish homeland. Unlike the other two parties, they are not on the CIA payroll and consider Turkey to be as great of an enemy of the Kurds as Iraq. Consequently, their primary struggle has been against the Turkish government—a government which until recently forbid the teaching of the Kurdish language in predominantly Kurdish schools and has fostered an ultimately racist attitude on the part of the Turkish people against the Kurds.
