Scrooge Soffe and the Bin Workers

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | opinion/analysis author Wednesday December 10, 2003 15:27author by Mags Report this post to the editors

Many people on here will be familiar with the statements of Willie Soffe, the manager of Fingal County Council.

Willie is on the Joe Duffy show today ordering householders to under no circumstances give any gifts to binmen over the Xmas period.

NO WAY is anyone to offer sums of money, drink, small presents, etc. to the workers in return for the services provided during the year. Apparently it creates a 'conflict of interest'.

Joe Duffy asked him was there any way that people could show appreciation - maybe send a donation to some charitable fund connected to the binmen, or to their Union. Poor Willie nearly had apoplexy at this suggestion.

Duffy, as his his wont, went on to suggest that people giving a present to a binman could be seen as bribery - that if the bin did not have a tag the bin man could take a Xmas gift and the job would be oxo.

I'm just wondering - do Scrooge Soffe and the other suits in Fingal Co Council get bonuses, etc. for their 'work'. If so, who is paying for this - the taxpayers, maybe?

This is an important story and readers MUST also make it clear to their children that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they leave out gifts of plum pud, sweet cake or drinkies for the old scrounger who illegally enters family homes late on December 24th. You'll know him, wears red + big white beard. Difference is that he brings a bag, instead of taking them away. But the principle remains the same!

Any one giving to the Oxigen workers beware - the actual workers are on strike for union recognition at the moment. The men on the trucks are hired in scabs don't give em a penny!

mean time - of course - give to the bin workers they have stood right by us and we will stand right by them (Fingal excepted!)

By the appearance of Turley on his web site he could certainly afford to lose a few pounds !

Your colleagues certainly wimped out over the CE schemes. It won't be forgotten.

Coming up to local elections is a great time for wannabe-watching. They pop up everywhere, issuing newsless press statements, posting a million letters a week to the papers, bandwagoning on campaigns they've played no part in, endlessly running around looking for an oppurtunity to muscle in on someone else's photo oppurtunity and causing more headaches for the cynical old councillors from their own party than anyone else.

Anyway, poor Turley has let it all go to his head. He's added 'regularly intervening on indymedia' to his to-do list. Now this could only be down to two things: He thinks some potential FF voters check in on indymedia and that there's votes in it (dont think so, Proto-Cllr). Maybe he just likes getting a rise out of the assorted lefties, just for the kick of it (A genuine human trait in an aspirant politician, how quaint).

Really, Deputy Turley (Oh does'nt that sound great), we all know you're pro Bin Tax shapes are directed at the good burghers of Ballsbridge etc. but see they have noticed cos you have'nt made it into the Irish Times. Less of the indymedia and more the Leinster matches, young chappie!

Thanks for the advice, Turley Wee, I am quite aware that posting to indymedia is not going to win me votes but perhaps unusally for a wannabe that doesn't particularly bother me. The reason I post to indymedia is to engage with people who are passionate about politics (and there are one or two on indymedia) even if I disagree with them. It is good to have your views challenged once in a while. As a matter of interest my letters have been published in the IT and the Evening Herald (you can see them on my website).

... the political debris that crawls out of the woodwork in the months prior to an election.

The Herald yesterday had a statement from a PD creature seeking a seat in Dun Laoghaire/Rarhdown. He was getting shockingly hot and bothered about the rise in bin charges. Pinko left-wing scum that he is.

What Soffe and the other county managers are trying to do is intimidate the bin men into not fraternising in any way with residents in local communities. they fear (rightly) that the binmen do not want to implement non collection in the New Year and that it's best to keep mixing with residents to a minimum.

I listened to Soffe on Joe Duffy today as well. He seemed to be equating bin men who take a few quid or a tin of biscuits with the corrupt and rotten property speculators and councillors.

The above mentioned parasites portray themselves as environmentalist, green, pro recycling etc.

They are supplementing their income however, with a nice little sideline into construction waste disposal, witness their skips outside Belvedere College. Now surely they are in breach of the Trade Descriptions Act as there is nothing on their website glorifying these activities. I wonder how they recycle rubble?

I think Mr Turley is really a decent human being(a closet socialist and humanitarian) who finds the companionship of good , honest, caring people ..stimulating,hence his addiction to a site where everything he now stands for is anathema to compassionate people of integrity and principle. Maybe he suspects that the people he has associated with(ingenuously),are something more(or less) than he had hoped for.He deserves an invitation to join a better Party than that which he now represents. He is young enough to have a conscience still, and after all...the" Car with the Star,."is not the purpose and reason for your existance,Michael.-is it really worth the price of your Soul and your Principles? Your Master,Bertie, claims its just a"Game" ..like a football match. The abuse of power,corruption,injustice,..is not a "game",Michael...it is something you will one day be called to answer for at a higher Court than any human -lawyer-enriching tribunal..Your undoubted talents could be of aid to the decent citizens of this country...but not as long as you take the 30 pieces of silver from Bertie,Mary, and the Soldiers Of Corruption,Fianna Fail.

Is your motivation to remove the current government based on the fact that they cought you for €130,000 undeclared income and VAT back in 2000?

At the time you were listed as a taxi plate owner and landlord.

Just a reminder folks - undeclared income tax and VAT which was not voulenteered but was settled as part of a Revenue investigation! This is THEFT from other taxpayers.... anyone interested in how many properties this guy owns?
