The Covid response was not an error, and it was not the result of rushing to counter an unknown pathogen. It was a lot of people, mostly professionals, systematically doing what they knew was wrong, says Dr David Bell.

Marjorie Kelly– Leading American Advocate of Business Ethics to Speak In
Ireland

The Fifth Annual Feasta Lecture
'Designing a Truly Democratic Economy'

[Monday 3rd November
7.30pm - Davenport Hotel, Lr Merrion Street, Dublin 2.
Euro 10 (Euro 8 members and concessions)]

Tuesday 4th November
6.00pm – The Linen Hall Library, Donegal Square, Belfast
In association with Sustainable NI

Each year Feasta, the Dublin-based Foundation for the Economics of
Sustainability, holds a public lecture by a speaker of global significance.
This year the lecture will be given in November by Marjorie Kelly, the
co-founder and editor of Business Ethics and the author of the book The
Divine Right of Capital: Dethroning the Corporate Aristocracy.

Business Ethics is a US publication on corporate social responsibility
launched in 1987 to promote ethical business practices and to serve that
growing community of professionals striving to work and invest in
responsible ways. Her book explores why socially responsible practices have
failed to take hold and identifies the problem as the mandate to maximize
returns for shareholders, which is an aristocratic mandate to serve the
interests of wealth-holders above all other interests. It offers many ideas
on how to move toward economic democracy.

Last year internationally renowned Stan Thekaekara, a pioneering social
activist from India and Oxfam’s first trustee from a developing country
gave
the fourth annual FEASTA lecture which was held at venues in Dublin, Cork
and Galway. In 2001 Dr David Fleming a London-based independent economist
gave the lecture. David Korten, one of the world's most powerful voices
against international capitalism gave the second annual Feasta lecture in
Dublin in July of 2000 and the former World Bank economist, Professor
Herman
Daly of the University of Maryland, gave the first Feasta lecture in 1999.

This event is open to all but will be of special interest to development
and
community workers, social and environmental activists, students, media
professionals and anyone concerned with contemporary global issues.

Feasta is an Irish charity founded in October 1998 by ordinary people who
are not satisfied with the prevailing view that economic growth is an end
in
itself and must be fostered at all costs regardless of the social and
environmental consequences. Feasta aims to identify the characteristics
that
society needs in order to be economically, environmentally and culturally
sustainable and to share this analysis with the widest audience possible.
