Irish Protesters Storm International Meetings - 16 arrested including one Indymedia cameraman A European Public Private Partnership (PPP) meeting in Dublin's Burlington Hotel ended with 16 arrests and reports of police violence. Over 300 protesters stormed the lobby of the hotel in which Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was hosting a conference to discuss ways of selling off national assets. Irish Indymedia Videographer Rowan D was arrested and charged with 2 offences against the Criminal Justice Act... Most worrying, Rowan's camera and tape were taken and not returned. Rowan is the second Irish Indymedia Cameraman arrested in the last 3 weeks (wolfe was arrested while filming a Reclaim The Streets demo - trial date 6 March 2002). This is a very worrying trend, is it a new police policy? The 16 people arrested were taken to Pearse St., Donnybrook and Irishtown Garda Stations and charged with a variety of offences. |

This is unfortunate as facebook is not open at all and is a corporate site with shady links to government actors.
I think we are not beaten yet and some changes to moderation policy, opening up a bit more, coupled with a better community element, say a BBS might help keep us alive. Maybe accepting a slightly changed role other than serious news site (who are we kidding?) might be necessary for the moment.
Growth won't be quick but I believe we can survive this transition and build up slowly again. The student protests showed how quickly this site can become relevant again. That can't happen if we give up and then aren't there when we are again needed.
I hope you have some time to maybe post to the moderation thread Eamonn. Your thoughts would be most welcome as always.

Hi WS,
No I don't think something drastic like that should be done. I do think it would be a good point for tech ppl to think of way of making an archive to this point in such a way to ensure thearchive continues to exist. Don't know much about archiving - but multiple copies of everything in many places would seem the way to go.
\i think peeps know my ongoing opinion about refoundation. Lock the site - keep archives online and put it up to communities who have used Indymedia.ie to come together to refound it / reimagine it with a bigger base of involvement. You and the gang who are working on it now have done great work - but the gang is extremely small and this kind of responsibility (almost like a kind of martydom at this stage) should be far more widely shared. The fact that it isn't is going a long way towards creating ongoing dischord even within the core of people still involved. Meanwhile people are using FB etc far more than indy. I don't know the solution but I do know for project to become relevant - a broader swathe of activists need to be motivated to reimagine what it should be and be moptivated enough to get involved in that.
what exactly do you suggest we do on sunday ec?

Good date for a badly needed refoundation of this project imo. Time to archive the first ten years for posterity too. Seriously!
we'll hopefully screen that (((i))) film soon as our birthday celebration (i'm on it...)
maybe even some cake and pints after.
Is the five year old now confidently walking going to have to organise its own party and cake?
back in 2002 those of conscience amongst us wondered -
how do you divide those 16 people who stormed the meeting into little categories?
Whatabout the 300 supporters outside?
Oh yes. a question which has vexed the finest of minds..,
The founding fathers of indymedia ireland worried about these things,
Sincerely & perhaps pathetically fretting into the night with frequency.
Wherefore now might a single one of the world readership dare stand forth & say :-
"they ought not have bothered these men & boys, gentlemen, rogues, dudes & scurrilous hacks..,
until wom@n came along first?"
This article was not a female or gender issue contribution.
It need be resectioned.

bar chart data - we'll be a while waiting
Christ, if 3 people 'stormed' an indymedia meeting we'd be doing well.
Anti-Indymedia Trolls only exist on the internet though - when it comes to real life, they vanish in a puff of smoke.
So anyway, four years. Not bad I guess.
Lá breithe faoi shéan is faoi mhaise agaibh!!!
Ach na grianghrafadóirí! nach maith an rud don phoiblíocht máirtíreach nó beirt a bheith ann.
Cead aighnis abú!
we'd be well beyond the help of the emergency services.
"Over 300 protesters stormed the lobby"
If 300 people stormed the indymedia AGM wouldnt you expect them to be arrested?
& did ye get them out of custody yet??????????
shona breithla dhoibh.
Hmmm, no wonder I got an F in accountancy in the Leaving.
Maybe with those numerical skills, I should be working for the Health Service Executive.

how we started being open source in your country.
we were open source before that in other countries, some bigger, some smaller.
We've been open source since Leibniz did the zero thing, well before.
You'll get loads of copy out of that won't you?
