Targeting Hezbollah In Beirut

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Sunday August 18, 2013 01:38author by Turing Report this post to the editors

Franklin Lamb gives an eyewitness report on the immediate aftermath of the bombing. Full text at link.

I stood for more than an hour just inside a women’s shoe store sometimes moving along the sidewalk, which front had been blown off and wanting to stay out of the way, just watching and grimacing as emergency vehicles began to arrive and thousands, not hundreds, of Hezbollah security and supporters, many armed, arrived and directed the fire trucks and ambulance, helped wounded neighbors among much shouting and emotion. Grown men crying, women praying, and before long a group of young men beating their chests in defiance, chanting “Haidar, Haidar, Haidar’ and Shia ritual meant to identify with the events of Karba in 680 when Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) sacrificed himself in defense of Islam.

Fadallah MP, Dr. Ali Fayed, whom I consider a valued friend and who is one of those within Hezbollah working to enact the elementary right to work and to own a home for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon said last night on NBN TV, that the explosion was a “very dangerous act” but highlighted that Hezbollah and its supporters will not be dragged to strife. Fayyad said regardless of the perpetrators “in case it’s Israel or terrorist organizations” that stand behind the attack the Lebanese must unite.

"I'd think long and hard before I'd take Lambs word for anything happening in the Middle East." .........wolfhound

I’d advise people to think long and hard before they believe anything coming from Andrew Coates, whose Tendance Coatesy blog is linked to by Wolfhound above .

Readers may recall the campaign against Iran’s Press TV , which was launched - in the name of “proletarian solidarity”- by Coates’ colleagues in the Hands off the People Of Iran (HOPI ) group and his friends in the CPGB not so long ago.

“This, not collaborating with the mouthpieces of Tehran, is the meaning of proletarian solidarity. And that is precisely why Hands Off the People of Iran was set up and is gathering support.”

Andrew Coates is a long time supporter of the pressure group HOPI whose leading members and supporters call for the suppression of Iran’s Press TV and all Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) output . “Ask the media outside Iran to place sanctions on the propaganda machinery of the Islamic Republic and especially on the radio television network (IRIB) a tool in the hands of the ultra-conservative faction. Any co-operation with IRIB, including access to international news, sport and entertainment media, as well as access to satellite broadcasting should cease.”

People should be careful of any state broadcasters including Press TV , but like Russia’s RT News , the Iranian channel carries important stories that Western news agencies and TV stations will not touch . An example would be PressTV's coverage of the Syrian government’s discovery of chemicals in a rebel tunnel two days ago .
