Many film lovers and people interested in LGBTQ history have asked us to screen again the film 'Different from the Others', which was one of the highlights of our ground-breaking season on Silent Gay Film.
Well… here it is! When the GAZE Film Festival invited us to present a special screening at the Festival, we knew what the choice should be. The first gay activist film, co-written by pioneer hero Magnus Hirschfeld (who appears in the film as himself), a remarkable piece of cinema which very nearly did not survive the Nazi rampage which destroyed so much of German queer art and culture. They tried to destroy this film too, but, miraculously, a damaged copy survived, and the missing scenes were reconstructed through stills.
Different from the Others is a piece of history, yes, but also an effective thriller, and a fascinating early example of political cinema.
