"Blue Gold - World Water Wars (2008) Dir. Sam Bozzo 90mins.

Wars of the future will be fought over water as they are over oil today. As the source of human survival enters the global marketplace and political arena, corporate giants private investors and corrupt governments vie for control of our dwindling supply, promoting protests, lawsuits and revolutions from citizens fighting for the right to survive. This film examines environmental and political implications of the planets diminishing water supply and highlights success stories of water activists from around the world.

This film is of particular significance in Ireland at the moment with the planned introduction of water meters and private companies queueing up to seek to profit off what was once seen as a common resource. "

This is a vitally important film for understanding the global context of the proposed water charges in this country. We are being told they are needed on ecological grounds. This is a lie.

It's obvious when a government give out thirteen fracking licences and then in the same breath, they call for septic tank inspections and water charges for "ecological reasons", that their concerns are not really for the environment, but merely for the enrichment of themselves and their friends and the carrying out of their agenda of privatisation.

Question is, will our water be sold abroad by these private companies for profit in the future? Will it be another famine situation, where our water is being shipped out while people at home go without?

Water is already to some extent privatised, because for years most tap water has a bad taste and is undrinkable so most people buy spring water in plastic bottles. Then there's the fluoride which the government still insists on putting in the water. Oh, and chlorine as well. No wonder it tastes a bit off. (Why not just expose to ultra violet light after cleaning and filtration instead??)

Was this perhaps part of a deliberate policy to encourage sales of bottled water? Now there is a real conspiracy theory!! ;-)

Then of course we had the whole cryptosporidium debacle which no doubt sent water sales skyrocketing.

If I was a sociopathic top bottled water company exec, I might have even paid someone to do that. What great high profile advertising copy that generated and what a lucky break.
