Another soft sentence: Chef loses taste after unprovoked attack

SPANISH chef lost his sense of taste and had his skull reinforced with screws after being struck with a golf club and wooden samurai sword in a savage street assault.
Jorge Roca (40), from Valencia in Spain, insisted he still loves Ireland and Cork despite the unprovoked attack that left him fighting for his life.
Shane Cotter (20) of Annmount Cross, Friars Walk, Cork, who has 49 previous convictions, was jailed for three years for assault causing serious harm.
''Danny O'Brien (20) of Brandon Court, Dillons Cross, Cork, who produced the golf club used by Cotter to attack Mr Roca and who has 84 previous convictions, was jailed for 18 months for violent disorder.
The Spaniard told the Irish Independent he was disappointed with the sentences. "I am not a judge. I am a chef. But that was not really very good," he said.
Cotter later told Gardai: "I wanted to do damage. I was in a temper. I wanted to kill him."
http://www.independent.ie/irish-news...-29053631.html A chef had his head caved in by a thug who said he wanted to kill him.He nearly did.He survived. His skull needed 21 stitches, and he needed screws to keep his skull in place. Not only that his cheffing career is RUINED.He cannot experience the sense of taste any longer since the damage that had been done to his skull.(Unless hopefully he learns to master his sense of smell more accuarately as smell is linked to taste and is a way of telling how it would taste.)
We live in a country where a guy importing garlic gets SIX YEARS.But these guys get a suspended 3 year sentence, they only have to serve months, and will probably get out early if they display ''good behaviour''.
Justice Judge Carney, gave a man who molested and raped his own daughter for over 20 years ,5 months in jail.
A man of polish origin recently had his face splashed with acid by an asian looking man in his 30's or 40's it was reported,if he is caught,he will probably only get a few years, and a suspended sentence, and probably out on good behaviour, but i doubt he will be caught with garda stations up and down the country closing..Its just disgusting.

Leniency doesn't deter crime,i have recently met a syrian woman who i was on a course with who said: ''In ireland there is no crime deterrent, people commit crime, break into houses, she had her home broken into, all they get is a few months,if the under resourced gardai are lucky to get them, and they get out to commit another crime. There is no fear, where i lived there was a fear, fear of getting your head or your hands chopped off..''
Now im not saying what she says is completely right, but we need to be looking in the direction of a strong deterrent.
Does anybody else see whats wrong with the justice system in Ireland.?

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8What a waste of valuable reading time. Capitalism and rampant inequality are the causes of many crimes. A deterrent would be the change the way the society operates, to challenge power relations and illegitimate authority, and to delve into our emotions and share our feeling with each other. Suggesting putting more gangs of violent police on the streets, and opening more cages for humans is disgusting.
You have no ideas or solution, this whole thing is nonsense and you have a lot to explain if you are going to support perpetuating authoritarian punishment.
It's not a waste of reading time. It's informing the public,of what soft sentencing we have, for violent criminals. You are not seeing it from the other side.
There are people i know who live in kilrush in fear of their lives,as they know the criminal families that have been housed there will get scant sentencing for their crimes against their neighbours.
What im suggesting is a strong deterrent, not injustice for protesters, being kicked and beaten, thats a different story.Cop yourself on and read this article again.A man got beaten to an inch of his life, and they get a 3 year suspended sentence for attempted murder.
You can't seriously be suggesting that, capitalism and rampant inequality was the cause of a thug taking a golf club and battering him vicously to the head.Nearly killing this man.
Sometimes, you have to understand(and if you live where i live)thugs will do things like this for kicks, and sometimes thugs just dont need a reason to do what they do,they ''lose the head'' etc..
There is no complex reason of inequality ,oppressive capitalism in this so called democracy or injustice in this case,it was simply a thug who could not keep his temper. He even admitted to as such.
There are many of them up and down this country of ireland, with convictions as long as their two arms, one guy had 84 previous convictions, and the other had 49,does that tell you something..Use your common sense on this one bobby.
This isn't about putting ''gangs'' of police on the streets, its about keeping gardai stations open, and having the punishment fit the crime..
To be fair, this guy got a raw deal and is lucky to be alive, the guys going around with fuckin golf clubs
in the back of the car are fucking loopers clearly.
" to delve into our emotions and share our feeling with each other" you have got to be taking the piss?
i am more afraid of gangs of gardai than i am of some fuckin random prick with a golf club and am an anti capitalist and would like to change the way society operates too, but come back down to earth and look at the situation properly. and if your not familiar with it, then look it up online.
just the other day some judge in cork gave a christian brother a 3 month sentence for child abuse. should we delve into our emotions too about that case?
wake up.
Indymedia is not the space it used to be. Scary, reactionary comments.
Good luck to us all.
Sweeping statements.....Your comments alone were reactionary guff.
Daily mail speak of percieved injustices you were saying i was trying to suggest.
I
On the topic of reactionary comments, speak for yourself bobby, maybe it's time you looked in the mirror and delve into your own emotions on this.
Sentencing in this country is nonsensical..Life for one, doesn't mean life,it means 14 years, and a suspended sentence, out on good behaviour.
Watching 24 hours to kill last night,a woman from sixmilebridge, went with a scumbag from the limerick area,to the clarion hotel,(he had booked a room for the night).
They met in a limerick nightclub, and she was a seperated mother,he was single about 23 years old at the time of the murder he was later to commit.
Ended up (according to himself) after having sex with this woman, and then afterwards 'arguing' over the fact he tried to abduct a 5 year old girl, and he was not taken by her obvioulsy outraged reaction, and proceeded to puch her repeatedly in the head and chest, knocking out all her teeth and breaking her nose, and fracturing her skull.
He then proceeded to get a knife and stab her in the genital area on numerous occasions. He then left her in the bathtub and fled the scene, and later the country.
Want to know what this fucker got for a sentence ''life'' in prison which in reality in ireland means,14 years and a suspended sentence, out on good behaviour..
14 years and a suspended sentence, and being released early for good behaviour, does not equal life..
