A free community sector training workshop. Dublin, 30 September & 1 October 2010

After this training, you will be better equipped to facilitate groups:

• using visual imagery in creative ways to explore local and global issues
• critically examining the use of visual imagery in the media

About the training:

Lourdes Youth and Community Services (LYCS) is community development project based in Dublin’s north east inner city. LYCS runs regular training workshops for community workers who are interested in acquiring the skills needed to carry out development education in the community. Development education is an interactive and participative approach to exploring the links between local and global issues and taking action. This free two-day training is available to those working with groups in community settings (community educators, community development workers etc.) and interested in development education. The training will equip workers to engage with visual imagery in doing this work, both in facilitating groups to create their own images (to explore, respond to or take action on themes) as well as increasing understanding of the meaning in the images we see every day in the media, especially representations of people in the global south and of marginalised or disadvantaged communities in Ireland. This training is funded by Irish Aid and organised and delivered by Lourdes Youth and Community Services development education team with guest facilitators. The training will be held in a central Dublin location.

Aim:
To increase capacity amongst community workers to engage groups
• using visual imagery in creative ways to explore local and global issues
• critically examining the use of visual imagery in the media

Objectives:

• Introduce creative ways of exploring the links between local and global issues.
• Consider visual imagery as a tool for action.
• Explore ways to enable groups to use visual imagery as a vehicle for expression.
• Develop photo-literacy skills to examine the use of imagery in the media.

How to apply:
Please email racheldempsey@lycs.ie for more information and/or an application form. While applications are open to anyone working in a community setting, priority will be given to those who can demonstrate an interest in linking local and global issues and who are in a position to make use of the training with their groups in the near future. The training will be especially suitable for those working with groups of adults, but may be adapted for working with older teenagers. See www.lycs.ie for more information about the organisation.
