Clinton Should Go Home

The appearance of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Stormont is an unwelcome one, a spokesperson for Republican Sinn Féin has said.

“It is clear that her presence here is to pre-empt devolution of Westminster powers over 'policing and justice' to Stormont,” he said.

“Any transfer of British powers over so-called 'policing and justice' will have no real effect. Indeed the Stormonteers charged with overseeing this – especially the Provisionals – will go out of their way to demonstrate their loyalty to so-called 'British justice'.

“And for the United States to claim that it holds any moral high ground in terms of spreading peace and democracy is frankly laughable.

“Whilst Mrs. Clinton claims that Irish Republicans 'threaten the security of every family' here, the reality is that both the USA and the Brits threaten the security of the entire world. The best contribution she could make to Ireland is to pack her bags and go home.”

I do not believe for ONE SECOND that ''Mrs. Clinton claims that Irish Republicans 'threaten the security of every family' here''.

I think RSF have manipulated her words. Can you supply a link to this comment please?

This is the woman who, on a visit not long ago to China, told the Chinese and the world's media that human rights issues had to be set aside when it came to issues of trade. Now she lectures to the people of Northern Ireland? Well, we're canny up there, and can spot a fraud when we hear one. But clearly power does something to female US politicians: anyone remember Madeline Albright telling ABC's '60 Minutes' that the deaths through sanctions of half a million Iraqi children would be 'worth it' to 'get the job done?'

Well said by RSF, its the height of hypocrisy to hear Clinton condeming republicans when she is the cheer leader for the biggest military killing machine the world has ever seen. She had nothing to say when hubby Bill slaughtered men women and children in Belgrade not so long ago. Dropping cluster bombs on a city was a revolting thing to do. Put me off the Clintons for life.....

Nevertheless, quite a few people voted for a political party which supported the resisitance to British rule in Ireland.

I'm old enough to remember the Brighton bomb, and the atmosphere in Ireland and amongst a lot of people in Britain was pretty jubilant the next day. The near assassination of Thatcher was a pretty popular move in the circles I moved in anyway.

"You still believe that the US cares about other countries."

Take:
Germany 1945.....ruined totally.

Ten years later:

Germy 1955....Germans are RICH beyond anything they had ever experienced.
American money.
The American Marshal Plan did that.

It was American dosh.

Of course the Americans are selfish.

America rebuilt Germany only because it was in their national interest.

Not for love of Germans.

The United States, rebuffing all attempts by Japan to surrender, showed the Soviets who was boss by being the first and only country in the world to drop two A-bomb on civilians, at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They could spend all they liked on Japan after the war, but they can never restore to their families the thousands killed by their hubris.

There is no evidence at all that Japan was trying to surrender. None.

Hillary Clinton addressing the British Imperialist Stormont Assembly on the 12th October 2009:

“Their thuggish tactics and destructive ambitions threaten the security of every family in Northern Ireland.”
(Verbatim) Please see related link on RTÉ’s web site: http://http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1012/clinton.html

The US Secretary of State has some nerve describing Irish citizens who are against the Good Friday Agreement as: “thugs who threaten the security of every family in Northern Ireland” and as “Evil”, given the reality that, the US has committed the most heinous acts of brutality against Iraqi citizens and conducted a murderous campaign in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and committed atrocious violations of human rights against prisoners of war, some entirely innocent victims, held in Guantanamo Bay internment camp - which the US Administration seems in no rush to close! Yet, unbelievably, the US feels it has the moral authority to send this one over here to speak ostentatiously about ‘peace’ and preach and that it is a ‘world authority on peace’ and wishes to impart such grand knowledge to the Irish people!

I would like to ask the US Secretary of State how many people has the US killed, and how many human rights violations has the US committed? In my opinion, no country in the world has as much blood on its hands at the moment (apart from the English Government). No one should take lectures about peace from any US Secretary of State - the hypocrisy of it is just appalling and shocking.

The US Secretary of State has infuriated many people (like me) who are vehemently opposed to the Good Friday Agreement and all that the British Imperialist Stormont Assembly represents, but who are certainly not thugs nor evil, but wish for an everlasting peace and justice for all citizens in the 32 counties of Ireland, which can only be achieved, realistically, through the final departure of British rule from Ireland.

I note Hillary Clinton made no mention of John Brady at all, an Irish citizen who died a few days ago in the custody of the PSNI - that speaks volumes, surely! There’s no change in the 6 counties Hillary Clinton - you can not purchase peace nor will Irish Republicans be bought.

As JF says the harmony of Ireland can only ever be achieved through the complete withdrawal of British rule from Ireland, which is exactly the aim of Sinn Fein long term. SF leadership are clever enough to play the long game. They have realised, unlike the knuckle-draggers of the Dissident groups, that armed struggle has absolutely no effect any more, indeed it is detrimental to this long term goal and for every act of stupidity such as shooting soldiers and pizza men or the murder of police men, it pushes the goal further away. Armed struggle will not bring us any closer to that goal and its time people learned that and wised up.

What Adams et al are doing is construed as many who do not have the foresight to look beyond next week, is that in order to remove an evil you first have to embrace it, even become part of it and slowly use your influence to manipulate it over time. If this involves nodding and smiling politely at the likes of Clinton then so be it. Some will not because it compromises their beliefs, apparently. One of the fundamental building blocks for positive change is compromise and so setting your feet in concrete, folding your arms and refusing to give so much as an inch is not going to get you any further towards your goal.

The quick fix that many delude themselves by thinking they can bomb and threaten their way there is neither realistic or practical. What the shiners have learned is to be politically flexible and fleet of foot. Realistically none of today’s politicians will see reunification in their lifetime but they still work towards it, which is a pretty selfless thing to do. Again it took courage to compromise – what some people see as selling out but which again was actually a big step in the right direction - in order to play out the end game, the Shinners had to compromise on some of their core beliefs, which is never easy but which demonstrates maturity savvy. Unfortunately again it is those who lack the foresight or the intelligence to see the end-game who rant about the Shinners selling out and all the usual venomous bs they aim at them. The bratty child stamping their feet and rolling round on the floor throwing a tantrum idiom has long since left Sinn Fein, unlike the more extremist Republican groups.

The greatest threat to reunification, is ironically, the so-called patriots (smattered with a good helping of corrupt men using it for self-gain and or gratification) who refuse to compromise in any way and who are vehemently opposed to any concession to the Brits or the Unionists whatsoever. This kind of puritanical Republican fundamentalism can not work and will not work and until those entwined can see that and adjust themselves accordingly, they will continue to retard the reunification of Ireland and only make it a more painful process for everybody.

Some individual calling himself 'Dry Drink Playing The Leftie' (above), if that is supposed to mean something, says there is no evidence that Japan wanted to surrender before the US murdered thousands of Japanese civilians to show off to Stalin. Ironically, by August of 1945, the Japanese were attempting to have the Russians negotiate a peace with the US; Truman was determined to use the A-bomb to demonstrate to the world that he could. A coup had actually been considered in Japan to bring about a peace more quickly. These are matters of history, 'Dry,' old son.

Hi Jade B !

Strong echos of Marshal Pétain and his Vichy regime in your post , Jade ; the extensive cooperation between Nazi Germany and the Vichy regime , the instruction to citizens not to fight against the occupying power , the use of the Vichy Milice ('police') to suppress those "traitors" in the French Resistance who refused to accept and work with the occupying power etc etc.
As Pétain discovered to his cost , "embracing the evil in order to remove it" is a falsehood.
Thanks!
Sharon.

Hilarious Clinton, the lass who mouthed off about Northern Ireland and US support etc., 'phoned Miliband in the UK the other evening and tried to get him to come on-side and object to any attempt to have the UN accept the recent report which pointed up Israeli human rights violations. The UK and France did not vote either way, in the end, and the report was accepted. Israelis, as is their wont, are now issuing threats of pulling out of that and withdrawing this. Clinton's hypocrisy is breath-taking.
