from 2.30pm Mon 16th June

The Bush Not Welcome campaign has called a protest outside Stormont, where Bush is expected to be welcomed by the Northern Ireland Assembly Executive.

The campaign is calling on all groups and individuals to gather oustide Stormont to demonstrate as close as possible to where the warmonger will be. The demonstration will last until Bush leaves Stormont.

From 2.30pm on, Monday 16th June

The 'Bush Not Welcome' Campaign has called on people to descend on Stormont and surround it with protest against the presidential visit of George Bush. The Campaign has condemned local politicians for issuing the invitation, and says the fact no MLA has spoken out is an act of cowardice.

Campaign spokesperson, Paddy Meehan said:
"It is disgusting that the Executive has invited George Bush to visit Northern Ireland. He is a warmonger with the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands. The vast majority of people recognise that the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan were about oil and corporate interests, not democracy or freedom."

"Bush also represents an agenda of racism, environmental destruction and attacks on workers' rights and living standards. He cannot be allowed to come here to portray himself as a man of peace. We call on everyone who is opposed to what Bush stands for to come to Stormont to make sure he gets the reception he deserves!"

Brendan Harrison, representative of Anti-War Ireland, who support the demonstration says:
"This is a huge opportunity for the people of Ireland to show their revulsion at everything George Bush represents. All who oppose his wars, who oppose racism, all trade unionists and environmentalists must mobilise for this demonstration to make their voices heard."

Jim Barbour of the Fire Brigades' Union has given his backing to the demonstration, 'George Bush is cynically trying to use the peace process here to deflect attention from his disastrous foreign policy in the Middle East as he leaves the White House. There should be a massive protest on the doorstep of Stormont to let the world know what people here really think of him."

This should leave time for people to get from the mass demo at 12.30 in the city centre to Stormont. Are you sure that he is going to Stormont and not Hillsborough?

I think the last comment is subtle trolling but anyway a word about language. Can people stop referring to 'huge' 'mass' demos as if they are already existing entities? Hopefully there will be a good turnout for the protests against Bush but there is no 'mass demo' at 12pm in Belfast city centre - we are HOPING there will be a mass demo. It might be tiny. Fingers crossed that the populace mobilises; let's not take people for granted.

(Btw, stoopid question from a southerner, why a march away from where Bush is staying? I doubt if he'll be doing a walkabout in the city centre.)

The long and the short of it is that the War Criminal's itinerary is unknown as yet. He may be at Stormont, but his security people might think that's not secure enough. He may return to Hillsborough which can be easily cut off, as it was in 2003. Everybody is whistling in the dark.

I understand the lunchtime city centre rally to be an attempt to get the maximum number of people on the streets against Bu$h and not allow the uncertainty about where he will meet those who want to bend the knee and pay homage to him to stop something big being built well in advance. If we find out that he IS going to Stormont, then the demo there is likely to draw all those who have taken the day off work. But for those who can't or won't take the day off work, the city centre demo is a good opportunity to make clear their disgust at Bu$h's visit and at the politicians who invited him.

Let many flowers bloom.....
