Who is making money from children with mental illness? It's not just Big Pharma, says Mary Gilleece. There's a whole industry of mental illness farmers earning tidy profits from keeping young people in misery.

IMPERO Meets to Re-organise its Committee

This meeting of impero is more than just a routine meeting. An election will take place at the meeting and discussions will be held which may influence far into the future the direction this small but seminal organisation will take.

A meeting of IMPERO (Irish Mental Patients’ Educational and Representative Organisation) will take place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 26 November 2005.

It is proposed to elect a committee for IMPERO at the meeting, as follows: President, Bishop Tom Daly OMA FRSA; Chairperson, Mrs Anne M Muldowney; Vice-Chairperson, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA PhD; Secretary, Sean Crudden B Sc H Dip. in Ed.; Joint Treasurers, Edward S Crudden B Comm., and Kevin McGeough BBS.

The main change required is to replace Mrs Teresa Crudden (President) and Dr Gerard Johnston (Chairperson) who have both died in recent years, RIP. This is the first rearrangement of the committee since the foundation of IMPERO on 1 April 1989.

If the committee is returned as outlined above the incoming chairperson will then facilitate a discussion taking in things like finance (we have cash reserves of ~ €900), resources, the future.

The meeting announced above was held as planned today and the Committee proposed above was unanimously elected.

A quite detailed discussion then took place about strategy for the future.

It was agreed that impero would adopt the "small" approach.

It was suggested that impero should commission a video on isolation and depression.

The next meeting was scheduled for the last Saturday in April 2006 at 2.00 p.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath.

A special meeting of the committee of IMPERO took place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Saturday 29 April 2006 beginning after a lunch which commenced at 1.45 p.m.

Present were, Anne Muldowney (chairperson), Thomas Somerville, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA (vice-chairperson), Sean Crudden (secretary), Ann Rogers, Margaret Rogers, Kevin Hynes.

Apologies were received from Edward Crudden (joint-treasurer) and Kevin McGeough (joint-treasurer). It was perceived that due to a possible change of address Bishop Tom Daly OMA (president) had probably not received notification of the meeting.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted on the proposal of the Archbishop seconded by Anne Muldowney.

Arising from the minutes the following:-

· The secretary is to contact further Gerard Roddy of the local health promotion department of the HSE to canvass the possibility of raising funds to create an hour-long video on isolation and depression.

· It was decided to wait to hear from Edward Crudden more about his idea for a mailing list for IMPERO to promote discussion and to aid internal communications.

· No decision was taken on a possible submission from IMPERO responding to the EU Green Paper on mental health. It was noted that the closing date for submissions is 31 May 2006.

There was a long and intermittent discussion on suicide prevention. It was decided to forward a proposal when it came to hand from Rev Fr Thomas Somerville to Geoff Day the supremo of suicide prevention in Ireland who is the officer-in-charge of the implementation of "Reach Out" the recently published national policy document on suicide prevention. Somerville’s policy would involve the setting up of a hostel in each of the four provinces of Ireland as a refuge where people who are suicidal can go and reap the benefit of meeting like-minded individuals.

A letter on "A Vision for Change" which Sean Crudden had had published recently in The Dundalk Democrat was read and approved.

A recent submission by the secretary to The National Disability Authority, in connection with its future strategic plan, was read and approved unanimously.

The chairperson summed up a discussion on the experience of patients and their families. "Patients and their families should not be treated in a colonial way - like subjects - by medical and support practitioners. Treatment should be patient-centred and based on equality and democracy."

The secretary said he had received no substantial reply to a request he had sent to Margaret Ameho, secretary, PwDI, asking for a formal association between PwDI and IMPERO. Nonetheless it was decided to authorise The Archbishop to seek, on behalf of IMPERO, representation from IMPERO on the board of PwDI.

Ann Rogers, Margaret Rogers, Kevin Hynes, Thomas Somerville were formally adopted as members of the committee of IMPERO.

The next meeting of the committee was fixed for The Strand Hotel on Saturday 4 November 2006 convening at 2.00 p.m. after a lunch commencing at 1.00 p.m.
