11 Migrants Burnt in Dutch Fire

category international | racism & migration related issues | other press author Thursday October 27, 2005 15:16author by got to be careful Report this post to the editors

Dutch authorities have confirmed that 11 migrants have died in a fire at a migrant detention / internment camp at Shiphol airport.

The news is reported at the same time that over 600 migrants arrived by boat to Sicily last night.

Now before we are sued for getting it wrong, the detention centre is used for holding both illegal migrants (WHO ARE NOT CRIMINALS as they are not thereafter convicted of a crime) and drug smugglers who are criminals.

If the 11 dead people were not migrants, and were instead criminals I apologise.

43 people were held in the wing where the fire happened, one of the most murderous fires the Netherlands has experienced in decades.

Police are said to have arrested 3 escaped detainess and to still looking for more. Indded police are said to be "uncertain" how many are still on the run.

["Problems trying to evacuate the detainees arose because cells had to be opened manually. Suffocating detainees kicked and screamed to be let out."]

The Dutch goverment and various local authorities have ordered an inquiry into the fire which killed 11 inmates and injured 15 at a detention centre at Amsterdam's airport, where both criminals and illegal migrants are held.

It was the second fire at the jail complex since it opened in 2002.

Haarlemmermeer Council has said an independent investigation will be conducted into the emergency response effort. 10 to 12 cells were reported to be burnt.

Guards are accused of not taking the fire seriously...

[""We remained locked up. Our throats were hurting", explained one of the inmates to Radio 1 Journal.""]
