IAWM condem direct actionists as thugs and vandals?

category national | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Wednesday June 23, 2004 19:54author by Benjamin - Galway Grassroots (personal capacity) Report this post to the editors

IAWM/SWP election candidate calls anti-war activists 'thugs and vandals'.

“The elderly are also concerned about riots. Activists have done a lot of damage to the anti-war movement with their action at Shannon airport. Some support has dropped off.
People saw what the thugs and vandals did but the Irish Anti-War Movement does not support direct action. We believe in peaceful means”
-Damien Wise, SWP candidate in local elections and chair of recent IAWM meeting in Shannon, in the Sunday People, this could be a media misrepresentation or it could be in line with previous statements coming from prominent people within IAWM/NGO Peace Alliance Circles. An explanation is required.

What violent action took place in Shannon?

What riots?

How do non-violent actions against war constitute violence?

Why is the IAWM colluding with the state/media game of good protestors versus bad protestors?

Why is the IAWM using the media to condem other anti-war activists?

Why doesn't the IAWM support non-violent direct action - the only thing which has had any practical impact on military re-fueling at Shannon (3 charter companies carrying troops pulling out in early 2003).

Does the IAWM dissasociate itself from the words attributed to Damien Wise by the media?

I only sign onto Indymedia when there is something big happening like Bush coming. I want to get to some one of the demos but since I work on Sat and Sun [and can't afford to take Saturday off] I'll be going to the Dublin demo. I gather that makes me some kind of outcast according to most of the stuff on Indymedia. What does it matter who organises these things as long as they are organised? I don't mind how many different anti-war umbrella bodies there are, but I don't like the infighting. It's just typical of the left in Ireland - first on the agenda the split. I'm off to join Sinn Fein, at least they are serious. Youse are all like a bunch of kids.

lets just all go to shannon and have a good time and put our various message's across to the nation and indeed the world as positivly as possible there is no good and bad there is just the reality of the event, what ever that becomes is beyond our control in the most part but once everybody is happy to be there we will shine.

Direct action is a civil duty ,which whilst being non-violent (inanimate objects are not sentient beings and therefore cannot feel pain etc) confronts the oppressors of the so called civilised society we are living in.N.V.D.A. has a long and honorable history in which many activists have taken part, including the people who took part in the 1916 uprising.
to attack an inanimate object cannot be violent if said object will be or is being used to inflict pain or death on innocent people.

The Clare Champion gives the correct figures for the SWP candidates in Shannon. It turns out that they ran in BOTH the County Council election (Shannon electoral area) and for Shannon town council.

County Council election:

Damon Wise (SWP) 27 votes

Karen Wise (SWP) 6 votes

Total electorate: 14,273

Shannon Town Council election:

Damon Wise (SWP) 15 votes

Karen Wise (SWP) 4 votes (apparently she has two other friends living elsewhere in Clare!)

Total poll: 3,824

There has been a lot of unwarranted comment directed at Damon Wise over recent days.

Damon and Karen Wise are not members of the SWP, and to the best of my knowledge never have been.

Damon Wise suffers from Asbergers Symdrome (a form of Autism). He is well known is Shannon and has been an active campaigner for disability rights for many years. He has stood in previous elections and received a similar vote as this year. I have known Damon for many years and is a decent and honest bloke. I only know Karen to see.

Due to changes in regulations for standing in elections this year Damon and Karen were unable to secure sufficient signitures to secure the nomination as independents. From what I understand he then approached the SWP and asked them to nominate him and his wife. You will have to ask the SWP for their reasons for doing this.

As I said earlier, Damon is a decent and honest bloke who has done a significant amount of work building for the protest on Friday. He constantly monitors security activity and has been subject to some harrassment as a result. Unfortunately, Damon tends takes things that he is told at face value without being aware of the motivations behind what he is being told. Many people, including journalists, have taken advantage of this "flaw". Damon has made some comments that have not been helpful in building for the protest, but it has not been out of malice or vindictiveness, but out of a lack of understanding of their implications. We accept that this is how Damon is and welcome his desire to help.

Please keep these facts in mind before jumping on a bandwagon to condemn an individual that is not fully aware of the implications of some (and I stress "some") comments that he makes.

The reason why there is such furore about Bush visiting Ireland,is that to Ireland's liberal and left wing who maintain a Nazi-like stranglehold over the media in this country,America republicans no matter what they say or do are the enemy simply because they actually represent an alternative to the libero left wing politically correct infection which pervades and sickens Ireland and Europe in general. The left and libero elites are terrified that maybe the irish people will realise the facist ideology which now holds sway in this country. America gave us the liberal disease lets hope she'll now give us the cure

This is merely another example of the willingness of SWP to hijack the anti war movement for it's own political gain. It is obvious that if everyone who carried a placard with swp on it at the protest marches was a swp supporter they would have got a lot more votes. It is a cynical misuse of the genuine protest of Irish people and fools nobody except the american right who now can argue that all anti war protestors in Ireland are "looney left". Thanks for nothing SWP.
