Special Election Coverage

category national | politics / elections | opinion/analysis author Monday December 01, 2003 13:46author by Blanketauthor address Belfast Report this post to the editors

This week's issue of the Blanket features special election coverage, including Tom Luby, Anthony McIntyre and Liam O'Comain

Ignore the Headlines
http://lark.phoblacht.net/ignoreheadlines.html
Tom Luby
In the wake of the count of Wednesday's Assembly's election, it was
perhaps inevitable that attention would focus upon the troubles
besetting Unionist leader, David Trimble and the electoral triumph
enjoyed by Sinn Fein over their long time rivals in the SDLP. The latter
result, accorded the status of a political earthquake by some
over-excited correspondents, reversed the outcome of the 1998 contest
between them, with the Provos this time winning 24 seats to the SDLP's
18 and the (theoretical) right to nominate the next Deputy First
Minister.

Doing Well for Themselves Alone
http://lark.phoblacht.net/doingwell.html
Mick Hall
Many years ago, the day after Gerry Adams was first elected as West
Belfast's MP, I spoke at a conference organised by the T. U. C. Trades
Council section in the north of England.

Our Day Has Come...
http://lark.phoblacht.net/ourday.html
Liam O'Comain
The Belfast Agreement instutionalised sectarianism and through its
continual existence especially via the recent Stormont election the
polarization between the nationalist and unionist positions has reached
a new high.

Paying the Price
http://lark.phoblacht.net/payprice.html
Anthony McIntyre
Last month when the much heralded Adams-Trimble deal collapsed the
astute Irish Times journalist, Frank Millar, aired suspicions that the
British government had given up on the Good Friday Agreement and had
approved elections that could only produce a compound from which no
agreement could be fashioned.

Sinn Féin Advances Enhances Process
http://lark.phoblacht.net/sinnfeinadvances.html
Fr. Sean Mc Manus, INC
Irish-Americans see the dramatic increase in the Sinn Fein vote in the
Northern Ireland election as a victory for the Irish peace-process.

'RSF satisfied with outcome - time to consider alternatives'
http://lark.phoblacht.net/consideralternativesrsf.html
Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, Republican Sinn Féin
The final outcome of the Stormont assembly election indicates a deadlock
as far as the Agreement is concerned.

Poll Result Highlights Flawed Agreement
http://lark.phoblacht.net/pollresult.html
Andy Martin, 32 CSM
The post election fall out demonstrates clearly that the agreement is
fundamentally flawed in that the issue of sovereignty was not negotiable
or dealt with in negotiations.

Election Comment
http://lark.phoblacht.net/irspelectioncomment.html
IRSP
The election to a non-existing Assembly in the North of Ireland has it
is alleged come as a shock to the British Government.
