SMOKED salmon is the easy part of Christmas. Throw it on brown bread, with lemon and black pepper, and the innocents will think it’s posh and that you’ve spent a lot. “Open-net pen aquaculture is not a solution to the problem of overfishing,” says Slow Food. |

Jump To Comment: 1Rampant consumerism is not just for christmas its for our life,in our lifetime a whole house,or two (depending on your wealth) will be chucked for rubbish, not to mention the food and plastics etc we consume.
People generally don't care about what they consume and chuck,as long as its cheap and from big warehouse supermarkets like tescos..
Nobody(not the main populations anyway) cares about ethical shopping or becoming a vegitarian to save the planet from harmful ch4 and co2 emissions..
When the turkey is done, and christmas is over, its back to the same old, same old, shopping, chucking and shopping again..Its an unsustainable cycle that harms the planet..
Why is it we don't care? Well just switch on your TV,or even the internet, what will you see? Other human beings on TV/internet,not animals or the animal kingdom(which is dwindling due to the obvious habitat loss from the effects of human urban sprawl)..
So there is a disconnect from animals from the day we are born,we are plopped in front of the TV from a young age,we see nothing but depictions of human beings in all sorts of situations,so we empathize with human beings, and not animals or nature..
I might see the odd nature programme but very rarely (unless i switch to national geographic channels).
There are very few nature channels,so we dont even connect with the wild through the medium of television...
We live in a very ''human'' enviornment,we live in concrete wastelands, some which are built on the most fertile land in the country of ireland like lexlip and dublin 4 etc..
We don't care because we are conditioned to not care..This suits big corporations who are in the business of deforesting and polluting the planet just to turn a quick buck just fine...
As long as we are in the system of capitalism, pockets of people boycotting this and boycotting that wont really work - i hate to burst the bubble.
But what is needed is a world wide enviornmental ideaology, not a capitalist,or religious one.. Until then nothing really will change,in fact it will get worse..
Expect more unpredictable weather, sinkholes etc,etc,etc.... By 2050 we will have 9 billion mouths to feed....
Something has to give..
