US and Turkey threaten no-fly zones for Syria

The threat level of Imperialist attack on Syria rises as the US and Turkey threaten to impose unilateral no-fly zones. Full text at link.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu are considering implementing no-fly zones for Syria after holding Saturday talks in Istanbul.. According to Reuters, Clinton said that Ankara and Washington need to plan ways to assist the rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad – including possibly implementing a no-fly zone.

During the meeting, Clinton also said a working group will be set up in Turkey to respond to the Syrian crisis, according to AP. The group would increase the involvement of the intelligence services and militaries of both the US and Turkey.

“We have been closely coordinating over the course of this conflict, but now we need to get into the real details of such operational planning. It needs to be across both of our governments,” Clinton said.

The ongoing conflict in Syria is becoming increasingly sectarian amid reports that rebel fighters have attacked a housing compound for employees of a power company, killing 16 civilians, mostly Alawites and Christians.

The massacre took place in Jandar village near the western city of Homs on Tuesday, Syria’s state news agency SANA reports.
"Armed men stormed the Jandar residential compound, firing indiscriminately and killing 16 Syrians, among them six Christians, six Alawites – including the compound director – and four Sunnis," said the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based NGO.

Abdel Rahman said the gunmen targeted only the Syrian employees of the Jandar power plant. The other employees were Japanese and Iranians, who live with their families in the compound in Jandar village. "The village and its surrounding areas are Sunni," he added.

The collapse of the Assad regime could lead to the repression of minority groups, former Russian prime minster and Middle East expert Evgeny Primakov has warned in an interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper.

“Should the armed opposition manage to oust Assad, it would try to impose a Sunni regime, which would immediately lead to the persecution of Alawites, who comprise a significant part of the population,” he said adding that everyone who does not share the opposition’s religious views would face repression.

Primakov also explained that Al-Qaeda is supporting the Syrian rebels because it is a Sunni organization.

Qatar’s ambassador in Mauritania allegedly offered his Syrian counterpart an advance payment of US$1 million and a monthly salary of $20,000 over 20 years, trying to convince the diplomat to defect and voice support for the opposition.

Hamad Seed Albni was also offered a permanent residence in the Qatari capital Doha, but refused the proposition, claims Lebanese-based Al-Manar TV. The diplomat reportedly called the offer a “blatant interference” in Syria’s affairs and warned not to come up with such initiatives anymore.

Acording to Debka Morsi has been moving over the past week in order to have the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt take control of the Army. The position of dual power in Egypt was not sustainable.

The question is why within one week Morsi has moved to get rid of Tantawi.
This is a major question that needs to be answered by every class conscious worker, in Ireland and everywhere.

You have now got Fascism in power in many countries, from Tunisia, Libya, Ivory Coast, Sudan, Gaza, and now Egypt.

Al of this in the space of a year. But it is the speed with which the Muslim Brotherhood moved against Tantawi, to take total power, power in this case of the very powerful army, that is so astounding.
This is the pay off from Morsi for the huge betrayals of the Jews by Netanyahu who agreed to coperate with Morsi in Sinai. So now Israeli leaders wil see AMERICAN, made and donated, Egyptian Army tanks on the other side of the wire staring at them from Sinai.

pat c your remark on the other thread to those so called supporters of Israel was very apt. Due to their betrayal over Assad there now will be Muslim Brotherhod in power in Syria and in Egypt. What a trap the Jews have been led into by these leaders who think they can do a deal with the likes of Morsi. Sickening.

..Fascism in power in......Egypt.'

Because an elected President moves to challenge the military dictatorship established by Mubarak in conjunction with Washington and Tel Aviv??

Please explain that one for those of us who think this may be a move AGAINST the fascistic puppets who have been holding hands with Netanyahu, and Sharon and earlier predecessors.

And if Europeans can elect Christian Democrats, Yanks evangelical bigots and Israelis right-wing Judaic primeval nut-jobs, while we here in Ireland have still to shed the grip of Rome...why should Arab/Asian peoples not elect Muslim Brotherhood candidates...

Should they elect Jewish fundamentalists ???

well, it seems the new government have absolutely no problems working with the Israeli fascists on the other side of the fence against the interests of the citizens of Gaza who need a lifeline to the outside world through Rafa from the outdoor prison imposed by Israel. Rafa is now conveniently closed. Many tunnels which the Israelis did not manage to close have now been closed by the new Egyptian government. Shock horror, the "arab spring" has not helped the palestinians in Gaza much has it?

The new Egyptian government just want undiluted power like any government, and they do not have the interests of their citzens at heart, like any government. And their actions cause the death and suffering either indirectly or directly of their citizens. Like any government.

The "arab spring" was an illusion. Now It's back to business as usual.

..simplistic and nihilistic, shalom.

You seem to think its going to change overnight into some kind of enlightened people's democratic egalitarian harmony of tolerant paragons.

For starters the military have been the entrenched tools of US/Israeli collaboration, so any easing of them sideways is change..though whether for the better or worse remains in question.

To say the Arab spring was an 'illusion' is idiotic, and an insult to the Egyptian people's struggle to free itself from centuries of colonial repression at the maritime crossroads of the planet. The WASP/NATO/Zion Gordian nexus will not be cut by some Alexandrian stroke.

As for your generalised pissing on all and '..any government..'..that strikes me as Tea Party conservative argument for precisely your 'business as usual'.

Its always easier burn a barn than build a house.

"To say the Arab spring was an 'illusion' is idiotic

Really? So then I'm an idiot for thinking it was just the hijacking and channelling of potentially destabilising popular discontent by savvy wonks using a bunch of fake "colour revolutions" and the other tricks of Gene Sharp and then positioning their guys in at the last post leaving the naive idealists who camped out in the square hoping for change wondering what the fuck happened while they still feel the jackboot up their arse, more of them ended up in prison in one year than mubarrak managed to imprison in many years, and now as well as the army, the social oppression of religious sharia looms.

I think an "illusion" is when you think something has happened but it hasn't actually and instead something completely different has taken place which has completely fooled you. I think that describes Kosovo, Egypt, Libya and to a lesser extent Syria now that some folks are cottoning on to the patterns.

Perhaps you need to read the indymedia front page feature properly and some of the related links. Clearly I don't think you have done so!

US hegemony is usually served very well by bringing in heavy handed and oppressive fundamentalist islamic governments. They don't give a toss about religion. You can believe any wacky shit you like as long as you play ball and keep order. They are far more frightened of progressive secular arab movements.

and drop your presumptions.

I never stated or suggested it wasn't hijacked...or anticipated, pre-empted and managed..thats nothing new. Mubarak was past his use-date and they wanted transition there for a while.

If you look again(before dong the knee-jerk watusi)you might notice its your simplifications I addressed.

No need to keep copper-fastening my case.
