There is not one word on his literature about his position on abortion, civil partnership, his opposition to gay rights in general, his opposition to sex education. Not one word about religious values. No reference to his support for the Iona Institute and the right wing economic policies of its director David Quinn (overspending on public services was the problem) His Brief CV makes no mention of his period as sec to archbishop Connell. He is only for adult stem cell research etc You would think he was a soft-hearted liberal! When will he come out as a catholic extremist? read full story / add a comment

FF, FG, Labour, ex-PDs, and other shades of establishement opinion are putting themselves forward as 'independents' in the upcoming election to Seanad Éireann. The mask of 'disability campaigner' or 'human rights advocate' is unfortunately the last refuge of some of them. This is most obvious on the university constituencies. The first Re:Public2011 event in the Button Factory on the 15th of February was such a great success., we have been encouraged to hold another big Dublin debate as soon as possible. It was a full house and had really great energy. The audience were amazing. We trended on Twitter because people were tweeting so much. The candidates all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to engage. We hope that after they are elected and sitting in the Dail, they will still enjoy that opportunity, because the next Dublin debate will be with elected TDs read full story / add a comment

Dylan Haskins is running as an Independent in Dublin South East. He's young, idealistic and already done many interesting things in his 23 years, from being a DIY punk setting up an all ages punk music gig venue to film making to helping set up Exchange in Dublin. Now he's running for election in tomorrows Irish elections. Young and naive, perhaps. But a positive breath of fresh air, absolutely. Ireland is fucked at present, maybe Dylan and his bold (anarcho)punk inspired ideas might be exactly whats needed to get things on track? read full story / add a comment

Beyond the political and financial classes, Irish people’s response to the crisis has surprised many on the Left, especially in the UK. Looking to riots in Greece last year, and more tangentially, the revolts spreading like wildfire across the Middle East, why, they ask, has Ireland not been more restive? Why, with joblessness running at over 13% and 1,000 people emigrating every week, did it take two years, and the intervention of the IMF, for mass street protests to take place? Given it is just days away from the election and a new government, most likely to be led by Fine Gael, many are probably wondering what exactly is the current state of Ireland and what are the prospects for recovery. In short, things are bad and a recovery is very unlikely. With the election coming up many people are planning to firmly boot Fianna Failure out and there is strong indications that people are not happy with any of the main parties. Therefore we should see the smaller parties and the independents having a real chance. Dan Boyle, formerly Bertie Ahern's choice for senator, is running for election in Cork South Central once again. This means he has to present a justification of his and his party's record as part of this government we've suffered for getting on four years. One of the ways he has been doing this is through his election literature, some of which I received in the post only this morning.
