"New research also indicates that the frequency and severity of violence forcing women to leave their homes could be worse than previously documented" SAFE Ireland warned that homeless figures and needs are being greatly under-estimated because over 4,000 women and children being accommodated on a yearly basis in emergency refuge accommodation are not being counted and recognised as being homeless. At the launch today of a new SAFE Ireland report The State We Are In, CEO Sharon O’Halloran stressed that women and children forced to leave violent homes are being caught in the cross-fire of the national housing crisis. She said that 37 services that participated in new housing research as part of The State We Are In are reporting that they have never seen things so bad for women and children. read full story / add a comment

Cllr Paul Donnelly (SF) has welcomed the establishment of the Tyrrelstown Tenants Action Group after a meeting in the Tyrrelstown Educate Together School. The action group agreed to hold a demonstration outside the Dáil next Tuesday, 22nd March. The group will meet at the Mansion House before heading to Davy Stockbrokers to hold a small demonstration and then will head to the Dáil to call for action against these vulture funds who are putting about 50,000 homes at risk". read full story / add a comment

ROPES is a literary journal produced by the students of the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. The theme of the journal this year is independence, and the ROPES team is seeking poetry, prose and artwork submissions that explore gaining, losing, rejecting and sustaining independence. ROPES 2016 will be the journal?s 24th volume and is due out in spring 2016.The journal is entirely self-funded, and to cover the production costs the young publishers behind ROPES are seeking to raise €1,500 through the Ireland-based crowdfunding website Fund It. read full story / add a comment

The lobbying activity of major corporations like Kennedy Wilson on rent controls should not be tolerated, according to Annette Mooney, the People Before Profit representative in Dublin Bay South. ‘There is a large rental sector in this constituency and we have already come across countless cases where people are being effectively evicted because they cannot pay exorbitant demands for rent rises. ‘Rent controls are clearly needed but we now discover that the global real estate company Kennedy Wilson is using economic leverage to influence Irish state policy. Guess where a property speculator can get their best return on investment in the whole world? Dublin. It is unbelievable but true. After chaos wracked on Irish society by the Celtic Tiger property boom, the speculators are back. A global survey by the research company, MSCI, has found that highest profits can be made in Dublin from buying and selling property. Capitalists generally expect to get a 10 percent rate of return on their investment in industry. If they want more, they shift to riskier areas such as property speculation. If they chose their city right, they can get a 19 percent rate of return. But last year, Dublin provided the jackpot with a 44 percent rate of return. read full story / add a comment

In the past week an unprecedented amount of community support has been shown to the squatters of a NAMA property in Grangegorman, Dublin 7. The 6th year class from the Educate Together primary school which shares a wall with the squatters spent their yard break creating a 'Save Our Squatters' petition which the entire class signed. read full story / add a comment

A massive eviction is underway in Dublin. It is at the complex of occupied houses and former factory spaces in Grangegorman.
Reports indicate that at 7am in the morning a very large number of private security angle grinder their way through one of the metal gates, invaded the area en massed and are erecting barriers (pictured) inside and trying to evict the occupants.

This Morning at 6.30am we were woken from our beds.Private security working for NAMA were breaking into our homes. We live in a flourishing squatted community in Grangegorman.This space which was once disused warehouses filled with rubble, asbestos and broken glass has been turned into an inspiring and beautiful place to be.The place is coved with artwork, and the community garden has begun to blossom.We have a circus space, poetry nights, folk gigs, Art Exhibitions, Fairs and a community Kitchen. read full story / add a comment

“No one deserves to live like this” A poster I came across on a billboard recently, juxtaposed by the wasteland where one of our block of flats used to sit, where working class families used to live happily, side by side, before they were all socially cleansed from the area, and for what? Already a year has passed since they were pulled down to the ground, and all we have to show for it now is a lousy carpark—desperate! Currently, there are over 80 unused empty units in Tom Kelly Flats, some of which have been empty for over five years or more, 3 and 4 bedroom flats too. read full story / add a comment

Eight housing activists were today acquitted by the Dublin Criminal Court of Justice, relating to a case spanning back seven months ago, when the charge against them of trespass was thrown out of court. All eight accused had initially set about into investigating whether or not it was feasible to open up, and re-do, one of the 80 unused flats on Charlemont Street, that had been lying empty for over two years or more. read full story / add a comment

Today members of An Spréach and D8HAC were again before the courts in relation to an incident in Tom Kelly Flats, Charlemont Street, where 8 activists were arrested for assessing whether it was feasible or not to make habitable, one the many unused and vacant flats, within the complex. read full story / add a comment

Wednesday 21st saw another successful defence against an eviction in Dublin. This time in the Stoneybatter area. We put out an alert after we were told that a gang of 3 men with crowbars "came this afternoon and broke in to one of the houses. About 40-50 people showed up outside to show support, then 5 Garda showed up. People inside resisted and argued until the alleged owners and Garda left the house and left the street to a large round of applause. read full story / add a comment |
