35 million euro has been spent to upgrade the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre. On Thursday 8th February, Project leader Ger Dollard was there to greet Bertie Ahern and invited guests only, to the opening ceremony of the 'New Visitor Experience'. While Katherine Webster, Project Director, was live on air for Clare fm giving Morning Focus presenter Cian Ó Síocháin a tour of the new centre and celebrating a photo exhibition celebration of traditional musicians and cliff buskers such as Dinny Jim McMahon and the Russell brothers; local residents including 'Timber Tony', another local whistle player and busker, were shamefully being refused entry to the visitor centre in favour of the business people of North Clare, Bertie Ahern, other Fianna Fáilers and their kind. read full story / add a comment

February 1st, St Brigid's Day, marked the day when Shell announced obscene annual profits of 20 Billion Euro, while the communities they fleece pay the ultimate price of environmental destruction and death, all around the world. Our government pumps for Shell but we're gonna stop them. St Brigid's Well, Liscannor, Co Clare is a site of annual open-air religious service on that day and Clare Shell to Sea were there to greet the pilgrimage makers. On Friday night, February 2nd, The Ruaille Buaille World Music Dance Club held a fundraiser for Clare Shell to Sea in Scariff, East Clare. Great night, fine people, music and dance. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 6th January, Cosantori Siochana, hosted a 24 hour peace camp at Shannon Airport. This vigil coincided with the fourth anniversary of the first peace camp conceived on Nollaig na mBan during the build up to Geoge W. Bush’s war in Iraq. This was during a time when the world was mobilizing for war and peace. In year that the world screamed for leadership our weak kneed government signed its name to the death warrant of hundreds of Iraqi citizens. This act of treachery, praised by Bush, denied by Ahern. The murder perpetuates itself on daily basis on the streets, in the markets and in every state building with the butchers drying their hands through sands of the Iraqi desert read full story / add a comment

Last Friday evening Clare Shell to Sea staged a picket outside the local Shell garage in Ennis. This protest was held to show solidarity with the beleaguered people of Erris. With just under twenty people gathering outside the forecourt a spokesman for the group said " this is a great turn out considering the call out was at short notice". Many of the protesters handed out leaflets to passing traffic as most of the drivers beeped the horns in agreement of the sentiment. Although Royal Dutch Shell sold its many retail outlets last year the Shell to Sea campaign has stage many pickets at franchised petrol stations all over the country. This tactic in Ennis was working well on Friday with no motorists stopping to fill up with shell petrol. This picket will continue next Friday after a public meeting in Ennis. The time and venue will be announced soon. read full story / add a comment

At exactly 12 noon today watched by crowds of curious people wanting to know what was going on, a proud member of the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) in front of a banner reading Shackled, Lonely and Beaten 'exposed' members of the public to the hidden cruelty, violence and degrading conditions animals are being kept in with travelling circuses all over Ireland. She was joined by other members holding posters reading 'Stop Circus Suffering' and 'The Slave Trade Is Alive And Kicking' watched by dozens today's event advanced our campaign to end the use of animals in Irish circuses. It was a great day, tons of positive feedback and more eyes open to the hidden cruelty in Irish circuses. read full story / add a comment

While Driving through Ennis town yesterday afternoon a local anti-war activist put six young US service men under (citizens) arrest. On Thursday morning an US troop carrier landed at Shannon with technical problems. This is a common occurrence with the chartered troop carriers that come through Shannon Airport. With an average of 1100 hundred troops going through Irelands second international airport on a nightly basis these aircraft are flat out ferrying young men and women to Iraq. Many of these stranded soldiers were billeted at the West County Hotel in Ennis near where peace activist Conor Cregan encountered six young US servicemen on the main Ennis to Limerick road. read full story / add a comment

Born after the success of a Summer Craft Fair in Bealkelly Wood, the first weekend of traditional craft courses took place under a few hastily hoisted tarps between the trees in the wet Autumn of 2002. It was booked out. Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength and the workshop infrastructure along with it, so much so that the little 'Village in the Woods' looks like a scene out of an Asterix comic. Weekends in the woods take place three times a year in Spring, Summer and Autumn at the invitation of host Del Harding in his woodland home on the shores of Lough Derg. read full story / add a comment

Two weeks ago, on a routine visit to monitor the on going war crimes that is the Bertie Ahern led governments facilitation of the of the US military troops and intelligence services (CIA) at Shannon Airport, I witnessed a new devolvement at Irelands second international airport. Sitting on the main apron in front of the terminal building was an Israeli Air Force 707. After a while a group of military types disembarked and jumped into the “Fixed Base Operator” minibus. They were taken to the Great Southern Hotel where they billeted overnight. Initially I thought this an emergency landing. Shannon Airport has been used on numerous occasions by the US Air Force to land aircraft in trouble. The latest happening only months ago when a C17 reported to be carrying Helium (yeah right) landed safely. Today the Israeli Air Force is Back in Shannon. read full story / add a comment

This ‘better late than never’ photo report comes after the recent instructions from the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) to Shannon Gardaí directing the withdrawal of all charges against Conor Cregan, Niall Harnett, Mags Liddy and St John Ó’Donnabháin. See http://www.indymedia.ie/article/74769 . Ok, so this report is 6 months late, but it was felt at the time, wisely or unwisely, that early statements or photos of the episode might have jeopardised our cases. This is just a brief summary of events, for more detailed versions see ‘comments’ for individual accounts of what happened. Some information and photos here taken from Airport CCTV footage and Airport Police and Garda statements requested by defendants under ‘Gary Doyle’ order of disclosure of evidence. Special thanks to Owen Rice for his legal advice and support. Cosantóirí Síochána, Peace Network meeting this Sat 1st April, 2pm, the Teachers Club, Parnell Sq, Dublin. Members of FEIC - Foyle Ethical Investment Campaign, PANA, Amnesty Galway Volunteers, Gluaiseacht and Na Cosantóirí Síochána, the Peace Network joined forces at Shannon, to push once more for the vindication and protection of our constitutional rights to voice our dissent at the ongoing Government facilitation of crimes against humanity at Shannon Airport. Despite anticipated harassment by Gardaí and Airport Police who cooperated in an aggressive assault to grab and steal our banners, we stood our ground, kept hold of our property and insisted on our rights to stay put. For the next few hours we spoke to many interested local and international journeymakers and visitors who were happy to take and wear the 'black shamrock' badges in solidarity with us, the Iraqi people, the tortured and the dead. Bearing in mind the recent ‘fly in protest’ visit of the Peace And Neutrality Alliance of Independant TD's and Senators to Shannon and their announcement of future plans for similar actions, and considering the recent instructions from the DPP directing Shannon Gardaí to withdraw all charges against Cosantóirí Síochána activists arrested for a banner protest on the restaurant balcony at Shannon in September 2005, we invite PANA and all other peace activists to join us at Shannon in further asserting and demanding the defence and protection of our rights to peaceful assembly and protest under Article 40 of Bunreacht na hEireann, the Irish Constitution. read full story / add a comment |
