clare / anti-war / imperialism / news report Friday November 21, 2003 03:19 by Court Observer
In Shannon District Court today, a resident of Shannon who took part in the June 21st.roundabout blockade, has been ordered by Judge Mangan to absent himself from the Shannon district court area any time there is a peace/anti-war demonstration in Shannon. He is to receive 24 hour written notice from the gardai in Shannon of any such event! He was also fined 200 euro.
The defending solicitor remonstrated with the judge over the constitutionality of such an order but to no avail.
Rampant justice was once again the order of the day. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, Wednesday 9th July, there was a public consultation for concerned members of the public to see and comment upon the proposed public safety zones around Shannon Airport.
Yesterday evening, four concerned citizens attended this airport safety consultation, albeit after being delayed for almost 60 minutes by Airport Police and Gardai on the grounds of airport safety! and they say irony is dead. read full story / add a comment

Earlier today, Ed Horgan, Conor Cregan, Eoin Rice and I went out to Shannon airport with Scott Ritter who departed for the States. A few days earlier he had arrived in Ireland to testify at Mary Kelly's trial in Kilrush and to give soem public talks on the war on Iraq.
As a sign of appreciation we decided it best to give him a warm send off. The Aer Rianta folks wanted to watch too! :) They were annoyed to see us there and accused us of trespassing, even though they knew we were just seeing someone off. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday, the 3rd of July, Mary Kelly walked out of Kilrush Circuit Court a free woman, to the sound of the loud cheers of a crowd of delighted anti-war activists and supporters. She had been charged on two counts – trespass (by going over the perimeter fence at Shannon) and criminal damage to a U.S. Naval aircraft that had landed at Shannon for refueling. The jury found her guilty on the much less serious charge of trespass, with the judge adjourning sentencing until October. They could not, however, reach the required ten-two majority verdict on the criminal damage charge, finally stating that they had reached deadlock and that there was no prospect of reaching agreement. Despite strenuous efforts by the prosecuting counsel throughout the four-day trial to discredit the defence, a significant portion of a jury made up of ordinary members of the Irish public could not find it in their hearts to criminalise Mary Kelly.

On June 3rd I received a letter from Aer Rianta's lawyers (Aurthur Cox) threatening me with imprisonment if I attend further demos at Shannon airport. Shortly afterwards, Commandant Ed Horgan and fellow planespotter and peacecamper Conor Cregan received identical threats.

see my reply to this at.

this week I got another letter, not answering my questions but repeating over and over the same threat. HERE is my reply which I will hand deliver to Aurthur Cox's offices tomorrow during Grassroots.

6 people have been arrested at the anti-war demo in shannon. Cops, including some in riot gear, blocked access to the airport, a sit down protest ensued, leading to the arrests, which were quite forceful. Included among the arrestees are one minor (aged 13) and 2 or 3 parents, leaving some toddlers on their own. The main body of the protest is now outside Shannon Garda Station, 1 man has been released and the police say that the rest will be released by 6.30pm read full story / add a comment
