The Alliance for Animal Rights is horrified to hear that a well known RTE presenter Ella Mc Sweeney has had two ‘pet’ pigs she raised in her garden butchered for food. This person apparently an animal ‘welfarest ‘’ has been known for her stance against animal cruelty in the meat trade.
The pigs were kept by her at her Blackrock home for several months before they were butchered. She is pictured in a newspaper with her arms around the two innocent and gentle animals.
Yet again we stress the difference in using animals for to feed our taste buds as welfarests do, as opposed to respecting the rights of other non human sentient beings to share our planet.

We have urged our supporters to stress their disappointment at her actions.

Sweden's fur industry has been forced out into the spotlight by the group Animal Rights Alliance (Djurrättsalliansen) who recently published a year and half long investigation.
The group visited 20% of Sweden's fur factory farms and found rights violations including minks crammed into tiny cages, death, deprivation of essential needs, mutilations, infected animals and psychotic behaviour from been unable to cope with this existence.

Today the Catalan parliament became the 2nd of the Spanish state's regional legislatures to prohibit bull fighting following the decision by the Canary islands. The Canary decision was more palatable for afficionados of bullfighting because they had never had a tradition of the ritual which leaves neither side indifferent.
The decision by the Catalan parliament to become the first Iberian mainland regional government to prohibit bullfights (noting that the tradition is practised in Portugal as well) has of course been and was going to be linked to Catalonia's resentment of the insistence of the Spanish state to homogenise identity and culture to the detriment of its own plurality.

dublin / animal rights / press release Thursday July 08, 2010 18:38 by Bernie Wright   image 1 image
AFAR would like to condemn yet again the keeping of wild animals in captivity for entertainment purposes. The 10 year old Penguin stolen from the Zoo and dumped in the City centre is yet another example of the dangers posed to wild animals by Zoos. Zoos are a remnant of bygone days and merely a continuation of the outdated Victorian menageries of the past. They serve no purpose other than that of commercial gain.

The Secret lives and deaths of 60,000 Irish hunt dogs?

The Irish Hunters are so paranoid regarding the inspections related to the upcoming Dog Breeding Bill ,that we in the AOHS have decided to try and count the numbers of hounds that Hunts have and that are relevant to this legislation, these dogs would currently be residing in Irish hunt kennels.

Having read the quote from Chairman of the HAI Gavin Duffy that ‘’60,000 hounds’’ resided here. He quoted this figure at a recent Navan HAI protest meeting a few months ago. We decided to gather the facts printed in the hunts own publications to verify this figure.

26-5-2010 .
Yesterday at 6.40pm a thin black horse was subjected to a continuous beating by a Sulkie or harness racing driver in Tallaght, Dublin 24 .

The horse which was pulling a two wheeled cart was beaten repeatedly by the driver who was accompanied by a youth. The incident happened opposite the Cukoo’s Nest Pub and all traffic was stopped both ways as the horse reared up on his back legs with fright. He was wide-eyed and not wearing blinkers. He was hit repeatedly with straps or reins by the driver.

I refer to the upcoming Dog Breeding Bill and the untruths being bandied about by those who are pushing for some dog breeds to be exempt. The greyhound Industry strongly claim that welfare considerations are more than adequately covered by their Greyhound Industry Act of 1958 . read full story / add a comment

Demonstrators outside the venue
international / animal rights / press release Wednesday April 21, 2010 10:53 by Tony Peters   image 2 images
Greyhound protection campaigners are holding demonstrations outside various venues on Dara O'Briain's UK tour after a racing dog, part "owned" by the Irish comedian, was fatally injured during a race at Dublin's Harolds Cross Stadium. The BBC is also being targetted, as the race was featured in an episode of its Three Men in a Boat programme, which amounted to a promotion of the cruel so-called "sport" of greyhound racing and where no mention of the death of the dog was made. read full story / add a comment
