The Socialist Party's analysis of the Lisbon referendum result, titled: "Lisbon victory not endorsement for hated government" is now online. A significant 2/1 majority, on a higher turnout, passed the Lisbon Treaty overturning the decision of June 2008. It is clear that the economic crisis served to shift opinion across the board to a yes vote because people felt that passing the Treaty might boost Ireland’s prospects for economic recovery. Last year Lisbon was rejected because people feared the consequences of the changes it brings to the EU and because of a distrust of the political establishment. PRESS RELEASE - 30th September 2009 There has been a formal call for the OSCE to oversee the Irish Lisbon referendum amid growing concerns that the result of the Irish referendum may be manipulated by postal vote fraud. A source within the Dublin City Council has informed the former MEP candidate Fiachra Ó Luain of efforts by the head of the Franchise department to actively register residents of retirement homes, prisons and even the army. The source has said that the head of the Franchise department has unsupervised and unregulated access to the postal votes and suggests that there may be concerted efforts to influence the outcome of the Lisbon referendum by manipulation of the postal vote system. This corroborates the fact that the ‘People’s Movement’, who are calling for a No vote, received notice from various county councils of the issue of postal votes the day after they had been sent out. ... read full story / add a comment

Former MEP, Patricia McKenna has accussed the EU Commission head, Barroso of illegal interference in Irish referendum, she said "its conveniently opportune that less than two weeks before Irish people vote on the Lisbon treaty the Commission announces that it proposes to give €15m in aid to help former Dell computer workers find new jobs. , Barroso is head of the EU Institution that will gain most power if the treaty is ratified, he should stay out of the debate and respect the existing EU treaties until such time as they are changed”. Sinn Féin and Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin in Lucan and Clondalkin held a day of action against the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty. In 2005 the Dutch people overwhelmingly said ‘no’ to the constitutional treaty, just as the French had done some days before. In contrast to the Irish, this was the first time the Dutch people had been allowed a say about the future of Europe; and they made it clear that they didn’t like the way it was heading. Did they want to get out of the EU? Irish (and tourist) people wake up to a sign of the coming times in Dublin. Hello friends, This Morning, Saturday the 8th August at 7am, Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon (IFPAL) launched the Vote No To Lisbon raft on the River Liffey in Dublin City Centre. This is an obsure but alarming article. I had to read it twice to figure what it was saying: that it is a crime to advocate boycotting Israeli products in France. A man has been fined €1000 for organising a boycott of Israeli products; and the French appeals court and Council of Europe's European Court of Human Rights upheld this. ... read full story / add a comment

The Green Party’s decision to support the Lisbon Treaty and backtrack on its long standing campaign for a more democratic EU will be more of a hindrance than a help to the Yes side. The voters would currently not buy a used car from the Green Party let alone a rejected treaty. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says the Constitutional Court ruling is demanding a law to guarantee the rights of the German Parliament in the EU decision-making process. If that is so, should not Oireachtas Eireann have a law requiring this too - and Westminster and Paris and Prague and Bucharest, and 22 others? Joe Higgins MEP on why he'll be campaigning against the rerun of the Lisbon Treaty and how this provides a real challenge and opportunity for the left. Less than two weeks after the Euro Election campaign a Euro related charade is about to be visited on the Irish people. We are now being told that the FiannaFail/Green Party Coalition Government will present us with the Lisbon Treaty for a vote in late September or early October as soon as the EU Heads of State agree ‘legal guarantees’ apparently clarifying what the Treaty really means. Lest anybody forgot, we voted on this Treaty in June of last year and by a convincing majority the Irish electorate rejected it.
