The struggle inside for prisoner's rights and the vison for abolishing this institution has often dovetailed into other campaigns on the outside that have brought imprisonment as a predictable consequence.
I can't help wondering if any thoughts of all the environmental problems caused by our Government's (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) failures relating to ratification of the United nations Aarhus Convention Agreement, which are ongoing, ever crossed your mind while in Castlerea?

"To honest cop: 'I wonder if you have ever considered the fact that the Republic of Ireland Government is breaking the law in really major ways regarding a whole string of environmental issues, and that it has been doing so for several years now - and all with the tacit approval and support of the legal profession? For example, the Republic of Ireland signed the United Nation Aarhus Convention Agreement in 1998, and has been COMPLETELY, and unlawfully, ignoring it ever since'."
Niall is a name that has featured through citizen journalism for a decade now and as can be seen from archive this man was dedicated to the public good and social justice.

Jail - I read this last night and all I can say is Niall, this is better than any thesis from a University and it should be core literature to those in penal reform, those in justice, to Judge Reilly, Inspector of Prisons, to learn from and to move human rights a stage further.
To a man who had so much more to give, my sympathy to his partner, his family, friends and all who worked with him and his quest for a better Ireland.

The church is NOT Christ Church in RATHGAR. This building is at the junction of Rathgar Road and Highfield Road (which incidentally is a Presbyterian Church)

Niall Harnett’s funeral service is in Christ Church in TANEY VILLAGE. This building is located on the junction of Churchtown Road and Sweetmount Avenue (which incidentally is an Anglican Church).

Just to confuse the church-going-public even more Christ Church of Taney Road is sometimes signposted as Saint Nahi’s Church.

Incidentally the place is right beside the Dargan Luas Bridge.
That person has read the details in the link he provided incorrectly and has directed people to the dis-used church called St Nahi's. Nor am I sure where the Rathgar thing came into it.

Niall personally suffered for his convictions and these harrassments and encroachments upon his liberty are documented on this site.

Upon his release from jail after 5 months I had the privelege to join Niall and others and we drank tea on the banks of the Grand Canal in Dublin. He clearly relished his freedom and remarked to all of us gathered that "This is what is all about".

Niall had many interests, he loved life, he loved nature and he hated injustice. It was an honour to have known him.

He will be dearly missed by so many who value substance over froth and he perhaps embodied those age old questions : If I am not for myself who will be ? if I am only for myself what am I?

Farewell dear Niall. You and your spirit will always live in our hearts and like many others who have passed you life will continue to motivate us to always try to right the wrong.
