Climate Camp 2010 12th-16th August

category national | environment | press release author Sunday August 08, 2010 13:08author by Jennifer O' Leary - Climate Camp Report this post to the editors

The Irish Climate Camp will take place this year at Victoria Bridge, County Tyrone, from the 12th to the 16th of August. The camp is taking place in support of the local community and their opposition to the proposed new A5 – a project that will cost a lot of money, a lot of energy (carbon emissions) and really makes no logical sense since vehicle numbers using that route have decreased considerably over recent years. Climate camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action to prepare for and mitigate the effects of climate change. The camp is open to anyone to attend, and will host numerous workshops on many aspects of climate change.
Calling all Happy Campers!
Calling all Happy Campers!

Climate camps are places where people who are concerned about climate change gather, live, learn from the workshops and each other, and take action together. Climate Camps began in the UK in 2006. The first Irish Climate Camp took place in Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly in August 2009 and was a fantastic success.

Everyone is welcome to participate in Climate Camp. It is run on a voluntary basis with donations from participants. We make decisions together by consensus and everyone chips in to run the camp. There are camping facilities for all with a communal kitchen. We aim to live as sustainably as possible on camp with a vegan and vegetarian kitchen, compost toilets and renewable energies. There will be lots of interesting and fun workshops for all ages including the history of anti road campaigns in Ireland and the UK, sustainable living, renewable energy, green building techniques, juggling, and banner painting.

We invite you, your friends, family and neighbours to join us in Tyrone and support the Alternative A5 Alliance to stop this unsustainable and unnecessary road!

Campaign group calls for scrapping of A5 dual carriageway plan
http://www.highlandradio.com/2010/08/12/campaign-group-...plan/

Campaigners opposed to the building of the new A5 dual carriageway begun a five day camp outside Strabane.

They’re using the Climate Camp 2010 event at Victoria Bridge to protest at the proposed new 86 kilometre stretch of road, which will run from Derry to Aughnacloy. The road, which is also the main route between North Donegal and Dublin, will be partly funded by the irish government.

The protestors say increased emissions on the dual carriageway will further contribute to climate change.

Speaking on the Shaun Doherty Show with Greg Hughes today, spokesperson Molly Walshe said she believes a rail link would be a better and more sustainable alternative………..
