Tax Amnesty last month for property developers!!!!

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Friday March 20, 2009 13:14author by Blacbloc

Exempted from tax duty while thousands loose their jobs

Public services wrecked, thousands thrown out of work, tax increases of every sort for working people, levies, fees, cut backs of every stripe and STILL the government is favouring property developers and property owners.

The Maman Poulet blog describes the whole sneaky little set up. As she says - keep this story right at the front of your head whenever you hear or read ANY bullshit about 'pulling together' from ANYONE - and especially when the budget is announced in April:

Did you know there was a tax amnesty last month? Country on it’s knees, social welfare being difficult to claim, cuts in public services, banks being bailed out… but if you owned land and had not paid stamp duty on it don’t worry - a deal was done and there’s been a unseemly rush to get it all sorted and landowners who ‘forgot’ to pay have been let off.

The maximum penalty any developer had to pay was 25 euro - even where thousands were owed. If the Revenue Commissioner collected 7.5 million even so, a huge sum of money must have been lost. Maybe enough to keep the special needs classes in schools for another year.
