Huge Turnout for Dessert Competition Final

The finals of the Galway Fair-trade Committee’s JUST DESSERTS desert making competition attracted over Two Hundred and Fifty people to the Galway City Museum last Friday.

The JUST DESSERT 2008 award went to an unusual and rich dessert called ‘Mille Feuille of Gianduja, Apple and Cinnamon’. It was made by Andreas Einde who works in Kirwan’s Lane restaurant. The judge Michael Harnesse from Bianconi’s Bistro in Westside had the unenviable task of selecting this desert from amongst ten of a very high standard but he eventually opted for the originality of this dessert.

Members of the public were there to select the winners of the Jury Prize for the best dessert made by a local eatery using fair-trade ingredients. After the public tasting of the ten desserts entered, the highest number of the 207 votes cast went to a delicious Tunisian Orange Cake made by Kate Wright, from the Cobblestone Café. Kate was awarded her prize by Nimrod Wambette a fair-trade coffee grower from Uganda. Nimrods very personal speech on the positive effects fair trade has had in his community alongside the display of high quality products and delicious desserts should have been sufficient to convince those in attendance of the importance of using fairly traded products where possible.

This event was organised by the Galway Fair Trade Committee which ahs members from the city council, Amnesty International, Oxfam and The Galway One World Centre.
