Measurable Reforms Required.

The 52nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women began meeting at the United
Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday and will be in session until the seventh of March.

A coalition of over 150 International Non-Governmental Organisations who represent the
Civil Society Groups on advocating for stronger gender reform architecture (GEA) will be in
session. Mostly these groups are known on Indymedia and the IMC's because they
have not stopped bringing the issue of Measurable Reform in the area of gender
equality to the table. and Ban Ki-moon agrees.

Today Ban Ki-moon launched a multi-year campaign to intensify action to end violence
against women.

The figures:-

One out of every three women in the world is likely to be beaten, coerced into sex,
or abused in her lifetime.
One in five will be victims of rape or attempted rape.

Other problems include:-

Sex Trafficking.
Sexual harassment.
Female Genital mutilation.
Dowry Murder.
Honour Killing.
Female infanticide.

The GEA intends to secure political will and increased resource from governments
to tackle the problem- this does not mean paying expensive lobbyists and talking
heads to produce pretty booklets but an increase in women's voice in:

Leading the struggle to expose and counter violence.
This means tackling the issue of rape in conflict situations.

The UN hopes to work with the women who have for decades fought to bring these issues
to the table and to ensure that measurable reforms are consistent with resolutions;

(61/143 and 62/133)
(62/134)
(2005-2006-2007).
I will update in the comments.
