'Haiti,
Democracy Movements and Terror Regimes'
Public Talk
At 6 pm
Saturday 1st October
at The Teachers Club,
Parnell Square,
Dublin 1
Speaker: Obed Alexis
Obed Alexis left Haïti for France to escape the bloody and repressive Duvalier's dictature. He comes from a quite poor family and he had to fight to go to school. In France, he was very active in the community, helping people with administrative papers. He returned to Haiti in 1986, when Duvalier was forced to leave the country. At the time he joined several movements pro-democratic before he had to go back to Paris for family reasons. He took part in the occupation of the Haitian embassy in Paris at the time of the first coup against Aristide. Alexis also organized resistance through marches, meetings and other actions against the Cedras government. He has a "maîtrise" in anthropology.
Nowadays he is working in paris as a journalist for the Haiti tribune.
