Shell to Sea Statement on Temporary Closure of Glengad Compound 26/07/05
Breaking news of retreat by Shell and Statoil from Glengad - landfall for unprecedented high pressure pipeline.
The temporary closure of the Shell-Statoil-Tideway compound at Glengad, Erris, is a tribute to the struggle of the five men in prison, the struggle of their families, the struggle of the people in Erris who kept this issue alive before it reached the national stage, the struggle of the hundreds of people who are picketing the compounds, the struggle of the people from all over Ireland and beyond who are camped out in Rossport and Glengad, the struggle of the fishermen who have promised to blockade Broadhaven Bay should dredger ships return to it, and the struggle of the thousands of people who marched on the streets of Belmullet, Castlebar, Ballina and Dublin.
We have demonstrated that while the Irish state may be subordinate to the profit of private industry the people of Ireland are not subordinate, and will not be.
Shell and Statoil may hope that we will be appeased, that one years temporary halt to one part of their development will demobilise the peoples’ movement that has grown up in opposition to their planned devastation of Erris and plunder of Ireland’s natural resources, but it will not.
