Rossport Five Rally - Castlebar

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Sunday July 03, 2005 02:47author by Ed - Shelltosea

Travellers Friend Hotel car park, 3.00 pm Sunday, 3rd July

Countywide Rally in support of Rossport Five jailed at Shell's behest on Wednesday 29th June.

There will be a countywide rally in support of the Rossport Five who will be five days in jail by Sunday without ever having their underlying case heard. The rally will take place at 3.00 pm at the Travellers Friend and will include a mass walk from there to Market Square, then to The Mall and back to Travellers Friend where speakers will address the supporters and well-wishers.

Justice delayed is justice denied. Court procedures have been used and abused to ensure that the Five are denied access to justice while Shell are given lattitude to work on their lands. Repeated referrals and/or deferrals have resulted in no hearing of their case despite seven appearances in the High Court over a four month period.

An injunction is primarily granted to stop changes being rushed through pending a full hearing. Normally an injunction is in effect for a few days only, or less commonly for a few weeks. In this instance it was granted to allow work to be rushed through and it will effectively last for six months at least.. There is something incredibly wrong here and it is, in turn, founded on a complex web of wrongs.

Come to the rally not just to support a good cause but to support your cause, your rights, your freedom, your constitution.

I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again: Ros Dumhach (Rosport) is not the only place in the world where Governments have ridden roughshod over the people to give a foreign oil company free access to oil. There has been quite a bit of information about the Niger Delta, the Ogoni people and Ken Saro Wiwa, so I won't repeat it here - I'll just make tha point that the fact we know about it and not about what has been happening in Bolivia is due to our still stifling links with the British Empire, which still controls so much of what information reaches us.
Just a few weeks ago, a vast campaign of civil disobedience led to the resignation of the Bolivian president, and blocked his would-be successor from taking over from him. This was a virtual revolution, and the straw that broke the camel's back was precisely that the government gave away the country's petrochemical resources to foreign companies.
If you have any few words of any Latin language at all (french, spanish, italian, portuguese, romanian catalan etc) look at the link and see what has been happening in Bolivia, particularly around the first ten days of June.

My sister is marching today with my Mum and Dad in Castlebar, her partner's brother is one of the Rossport 5 and to say that we are incensed as a family would be an understatement!! I live in Surrey, England and will ensure this story reaches maximum exposure as I hope the same exposure reaches the idiots responsible for this complete ignorance of civil liberty and freedom-it stinks!
