Dr. David Starkey compares the Gunpowder Plot to 9/11 (people must be getting bored with Guy Fawkes), slyly referring to Ireland by saying "There is nothing like economic prosperity to erode religious conviction. Just look at what's happened in Ireland, where religious fundamentalism has waned as the country has become richer."
Maybe my memory is faulty, but Ireland wasn't noticeably more fundamentalist in 1990 than now.
The National Secuar Society supported him in his comments - he is an Honorary Associate.
