A one-day workshop
This workshop is aimed at those who are new to studying about the region, and want to learn more about it for the purposes of activism, travel, volunteering or similar.
This workshop will provide an overview of Latin America from a socio-cultural perspective. What kind of societies exists in Latin America and how equal are they? What factors determine access to power and wealth? An insight into the development of Latin American society and identity, from pre-colonial to the present day, will be provided. The issue of race and ethnicity will also be looked at, focusing especially on the rights of the indigenous people of Latin America. A session will also be included on Latin Americas inspiring and vital social movements, which include land, housing, indigenous rights and environmental movements.
