WEALTH FROM WASTE: THE ALTERNATIVE TO INCINERATION AND DUMPING, with Dr. Niamh Clune.
WEALTH FROM WASTE: THE ALTERNATIVE TO INCINERATION AND DUMPING, with Dr. Niamh Clune.
WHERE: AC213, right from the Bank of Ireland in the Concourse (the long low building with the two towers), NUIG.
WHEN: 8pm, Thursday, January 13th
Dr. Niamh Clune was involved in successful campaigns against incinerators that were going to be built in Guildford, Redhill and Capel, England and worked in the field of Social Psychology and Community Development for Oxfam in Africa, which included helping to rebuild communities after war, disease, displacement and famine, during which time she became deeply concerned with how environmental issues impact on World Poverty.
She is director of the recently founded NGO “Wealth-from-Waste”, whose agenda is described on their website as:
“We feel; therefore, that Waste Management needs to be more than just trucking operations; we believe it should be about managing the world’s precious resources AND climates, responsibly. For every 1 rubbish bin of waste put on the local curb for disposal, an equivalent of 71 bins of waste are created by mining, agriculture, logging and energy production ( often amist great destruction to local communities). These industrial processes convert virgin materials into finished products and packaging. The average life-span of such products is approximately six months and then the processes begin all over again. We believe that this system does not make economic or environmental sense.”
