The Supreme Court of Chile has removed the immunity which had been grantedto Augusto Pinochet as a constitutional mechanism to secure the military coalescence with the people of Chile after his dictatorship ended.

The immunity afforded the dictator for his resonsibility in the crimes committed by Operation Condor has ended.

He can now be brought to trial for the part he played in the military dictatorship of the 1970s and for murdering leftwing activists of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay and further afield.

This was previously reported on the week of 28th May 2004 (in the other press section) when the court in Santiago de Chile began the process but that decision had to pass the Supreme court "hurdle", and it's rejection of the "senile defence" really marks the end for the dictator.
