Dutch activists take over the torch
The past half year, Ireland has been presiding the European Union. From next thursday, July the 1st, untill the end of 2004, the Netherlands are presiding. Dutch activists, anarchists and others are planning protests. They can be helped a lot by hearing from similar protests at the summits in Ireland. Also would it be great to get all the available information about the exact content and decisions in the Irish summits.
These are the upcoming anti-summits:
2-4 july, ministers gathering on economic competition held in Maastricht, anti-summit organised by rethinkcollective, http://www.rethinkcollective.org
Only informative, no actions or demonstrations planned.
16-18 july, ministers gathering on environment, held in Maastricht. anti-summit organised by milieudefensie, the dutch branch of friends of the earth. http://www.milieudefensie.nl/klimaat
Mostly informative, one action.
18 september, ministers gathering on defence/warfare, held in Noordwijk. Anti-summit organised by a temporary activist coalition called "omega establishment team". http://www.defensietop.tk (soon more of the information on that site in English).
The anti-summit will be a creative autonomous protest with the possibility to bring in own 'battle-groups'. We'd like to know where the previous defence-summit in Ireland was about, what decisions were made, etc. If there were protests at that summit, we'd like to get in touch with the people that organized it! If you know which organizations/people were involved, please let them know that we're trying to get in touch with them! mail to defensietop@gmx.net
10 november, ministers gathering on integration/migration, anti-summit organized by the n10-coalition, including the youth branch of the green party, socialist groups and autonomous groups. http://www.n10.nl
Probably informative gathering and demonstration.

Jump To Comment: 1 2I don't think there was any specific 'defence-summit' in Ireland.
Probably because Ireland is OSTENSIBLY a neutral country
and the high costs of policing protests.
Many of the EU meetings took place in Brussels [with Irish lamb for dinner!]
with 'good' meetings on Health, Environment, Day of Welcomes taking place in Ireland.
Interesting to note that business groups in Ireland (IBEC), Netherlands (VNO-NCW), Luxembourg (FEDIL) and the UK (CBI) have grouped together to more effectively lobby the rotating EU Presidency.
According to reports the 4 govts of the 2004/05 Presidencies are all pro EU reform in favour of business.
The Irish Presidency has shown this to be true.
eg. Cutbacks to Irish social welfare show that demands to "tailor employment and social policy to the needs of business" are being implemented.
I think the business model to lobby the EU presidency could be subverted!
with a spirit of Internationalism Irish, Dutch, Lux and UK - people could collaborate in protests and events - eg the G8 protests in the UK next July.
Anyway I'm off to catch the football,
talk to ya later
Up Portugal!!!
