Rialto Branch of the Irish Anti-war Movement to have a film screening followed by an open forum discussion
The Rialto branch of the Irish Anti-war movement (IAWM) are planning to screen a short documentary on the current political situation in the middle east in St. Andrews Community Centre, SC Road, Rialto, Dublin 8 on Thursday June 3rd at 7.30pm. This will be followed by our guest speaker Raymond Deane leading to an open forum discussion.
The discussion will focus on the upcoming visit of President George W. Bush on June 25th and how the Irish public can come out and protest and send a clear message that we do not agree with his or his administrations policy throughout the Middle East.
In light of recent developments, this visit by a sitting US President in an election year takes on a heightened significance. As Iraq continues to disintegrate and Israel ramps up its terrorism against the Palestinian people the anti-war movement around the world grows in size, confidence and influence. If there was ever a time to make the voice of reason and humanity heard, that time is now.
The evening promises to be an opportunity to become more informed and to meet others living locally who share that concern The clear majority of the Irish public (and people throughout the world) are unhappy with the continued occupation of Iraq, and still our current Government allows the US military to use Shannon. Reports of abuse of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of US & UK military have been circulating and reported on by Journalist Robert Fisk & Amnesty International since as early as July 2003 yet our mainstream media's hand had to be forced to report responsibly following the recent publication of photos in the world press. We, the Irish people, are in a unique and historic position on June 25th to make our voices heard by using the most democratic right of all, the right to peaceful protest. We can best support the peoples of Iraq by coming out on June 25th. At the same time we are sending out a clear message to George Bush that we do not accept his foreign policies whilst letting our Government know that they need to start listening to us about Shannon.
We can effect change and this screening and forum is about making that happen. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
