Nigerian Socialist begins Speaking Tour of Ireland
Today, Segun Sango a pro- democracy, labour activist and socialist will begin a speaking tour of Ireland talking about his experiences in the fight for democratic rights and workers’ rights in Nigeria at a number of public meetings in Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Belfast. Segun will be speaking in Dublin this Thursday 6th May.
Segun Sango is:
· Chairman of the Lagos state National Conscience Party, a broad party of ordinary Nigerians who make up the main opposition to the current regime of Obasanjo.
· A member of the LASCO Committee (Labour Civil Society Coalition), a body established by trades unions in Nigeria.
· A member of the organising committee of CDWRN (Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights in Nigeria), which organises solidarity support amongst workers and ordinary people in the West.
· The General Secretary of the Democratic Socialist Movement, the largest socialist party in Nigeria.
Segun Sango Speaks in Dublin:
This Thursday, 6th May, 7.30 pm,
Teachers Club, Parnell Square
Segun’s speaking tour in Ireland is part of a wider speaking tour throughout Europe. During the visit he will highlight the real reason why so many are forced to flee Nigeria and seek asylum here in Ireland and other European countries. This being the lack of democratic rights and state repression by the Nigerian government.
Segun will expose during his speaking tour the role played by American and European multinationals such as Shell in plundering Nigeria of its vast oil reserves while ordinary Nigerians are forced with massive hikes in the price of fuel.
This visit is a rare opportunity to interview Segun, a leading activist in Nigeria for 20 years, to get a first hand account of the political and social situation in Africa’s most populous country. It is being organised and hosted by the Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights in Nigeria (CDWRN) by Joe Higgins TD of the Socialist Party a sister Party of the Democratic Socialist Movement. It is a timely visit in light of the government’s upcoming citizenship referendum. Segun will be available for interviews from now until Tuesday next.
